Lettering by hand

Lately I’ve really been getting into hand lettering. I’m totally inspired by Marian Bantjes, Linzie Hunter and Chris Piascik amongst a few others. For a long time I’ve felt either overwhelmed or just flat out imprisoned by computer fonts, so I’m enjoying the freedom of shaping my own words.

These are a few of my recent favourites from the Hand Drawn Type pool on flickr.

I could study Chris Piascik’s letter forms all day – his ability to form unique letters knows no bounds!

Linzie Hunter’s darling work! This is my favourite, because it’s totally girly and completely appropriate to the subject.

It’s cool to D.I.Y

I don’t often post photography, but Paul Vanzella’s D.I.Y featuring MissT blew me away tonight.

The styling, the subject, the FABULOSITY!!!!

Some pictures of things I’ve been busy making…

our thank you notes

Thank you notes for our wedding (yes, late but what else would my friends and family expect from me?)

I'm Not Showing You

My rat Willis died on Saturday :(

I’ve also been quite busy with freelance design work! If you want to check out my portfolio, it’s over here on natalieperkins.com.

What tools do you use?

my pen collection

Pens. PENS! I love pens.
I used to be the stationery queen at one of my old jobs, and I got to order all the stationery for the company. I pretty much hated it, but I loved flipping through the catalogue looking at all the pens.

The other week I ordered some stuff through JetPens, and was pleasantly surprised by the arrival of my package only a few days later. Living on this brown island, you get used to websites that don’t ship to Australia and incredibly slow shipping times so it was nice to receive a couple of packages (one was this gorgeous brooch from Elsa Mora!) so soon after ordering.

And now, some pen porn!

JetPens, I think I love you

What tools do you use every day?

World Youth Day, not so much for youths of the world

you darn punks! by Paul McClintock

I don’t often get into divisive topics here, but I need to talk about World Youth Day and what a load of civil rights intruding bollocks it is. Not only are the “celebrations” making it difficult for citizens of Sydney to move around their city for the month – new laws are in operation until the end of July making it an offense to cause “annoyance”. The declared areas in the city which are covered by these ridiculous laws include 40 city locations, more than 500 schools and 35 train and bus stations.

Now, I’m reasonable. I don’t like being annoyed. I hate it when the kids in our unit block bounce balls in our courtyard of amazing acoustics, but would I fine them up to $5500? HELL NO. However, if you’re in a declared zone in Sydney during this month and you’re wearing a shirt someone doesn’t agree with, skateboarding or just generally being youthful – you could cop a fine.

In celebration, the awesome Red Bubble t-shirt group Agent Provocateur are running a WYD t-shirt design challenge. The submissions so far are delightful, offensive and definitely worth a $5500 fine.

My doodles (how rude)

Sometimes I doodle just for the hell of it, and there are a lot of times that I produce things that are kind of cool that I could never sell as prints. For example: lately I have taken to defacing my magazines – it’s a way to reuse paper, and often the paper stock is quite lovely to draw on (Frankie in particular!)

Enjoy :D

Bad Ass
This was from a Frankie magazine, no. 20 to be exact.

Phantom Paisley
Obviously, a Calvin Klein ad from Vogue.

A few of my pens have run out of ink, time to buy some more! Horah pen shopping!

When words fail, there are cupcakes…

Peanut butter frosted cupcakes

Lately I have been pretty busy and preoccupied with other things, and I feel bad that I have neglected my bloggerly duties. Sometimes, you get into funks and just don’t know what to write about! I am a very visual person, and often I feel like I could just communicate via images but for some reason I don’t think that’s good enough for this blog.

I’m dragging myself out of this blogging rut, and posting my latest creation: peanut butter frosted cupcakes. They’re delicious!

I loved cupcakes before they were cool

And also this – a very tongue in cheek stab at indie poseurs :)
You can buy it on a t-shirt or as a print!
