Curvy’s Brisbane launch at Nine Lives

When Mel Baxter asked if I’d like to be part of the launch exhibition for Curvy 2010 at Nine Lives I was really, really, really honoured. It’s been a rough few months and the opportunity to hang my work besides the lovely likes of Courtney Brims, Lilly Piri, Beci Orpin and Bec Winnel was so spirit lifting! (Yes, yes, this is my daggy “You really like me!!!” moment!)

Tonight was the launch party and I was accompanied by Nick and Zoe. I won’t lie, I dread opening nights for art shows and stuff because I get really anxious. I’ve just started medication again this week to address said anxiousness and the first couple of weeks is usually really not fabulous so I was glad to have the company of my people. Especially because today was very not fabulous in the old brain area. Unfortunately tonight’s outing was soured when we were egged, and I copped most of it in my hair and on my polka dot dress. People can be real jerks. If I’d wanted to do a protein treatment I would have done it myself douchebags!

  1. Congrats on having your art work shown! Your work is amazing. I showed some works to my students and they were AMAZED. They also loved that you were from Australia. I’m really sorry about you getting egged. So sorry. xoxo

  2. I can not believe you were egged! Who the hell does that and why? I can’t believe it, makes me so so so mad. I know all about anxiety disorders, as my husband suffers from it. An egging would so not help, what morons!

  3. What the fuck about you getting egged! What are they, 11? I’m so sorry that happened to you, especially when going out and attending the event was stressful (I suffer from anxiety and panic attacks so I can empathise a bit). Good on you for being able to stick it out – I’d have totally crumbled, in fact I did crumble when I got a bottle of juice thrown over me from a car once but seriously. I’m so sorry Natalie!

Anyway, the most important thing was that you attended, and your amazing work was exhibited for all to see. Go you!

  4. Congratulations for the show but, most of all, for a lady feeling anxious and all, you looked great, especially when you where wearing that smile of yours. And the polka dot dress was very nice and suited you. You looked grand!

  5. YOU LOOK FANTASTIC in your photos, and I know your art is wonderful :) Congratulations on your show!
You got egged? What the hell? I hope you weren’t injured (physically/emotionally). I don’t suffer from anxiety, but that would have sent me home in tears. Good on you darlin’.

  7. Gosh, sorry to hear about the egg incident, that’s so horrible but congratulations on your exhibition, that’s so fantastic!!

  8. I’m sorry I didn’t get to see you there, but your works looked fabulous! I’m also sorry that you got egged – what total jerks. This is why I hate the Valley now, although usually on a weeknight it’s ok. I guess it wasn’t last night. :(

What are your thoughts on the ‘all dudes’ book that came out with the girls’ book for Curvy this year? I don’t know – for some reason it kind of takes away the whole point of Curvy for me as being a way to showcase female art in a male-dominated industry. But maybe there was a call for it? Who knows…

  9. Seeing your work on the wall there is so exciting! I want to own one of your pieces one day. I just can’t believe you were egged! Who even does that?

  10. You look fantastic, Natalie! And I would have loved to go to that art exhibitioning, it looks really nice. The egging thing leaves me baffled. Who does that? :|
