It’s the last day of the year and I’ve seen a bunch of blogs do recaps of the highlights of their year, and so I thought I’d do mine too. This year was packed with fun and challenge and sadness, and I can’t say it was a terrible year but I can say it was a year of growing as an artist, a writer and a person. I did some stuff that astounds me even now, I just can’t believe it was me who flew alone to interstate fashion events and presented at an academic conference!

Here’s some of my favourite blog posts from this year, I hope you enjoy reading them again or for the first time.

Body Image

Tights are Tights
After being so horrified at the amount of body and fashion policing I saw when it came to the issue of “tights as pants” I wrote a post about tights just being tights. The reception was split quite evenly in half, with the anti-tights as pants group dealing in a lot of body shaming which was frankly awful to read when I was moderating comments.

You can’t bully me out of my skinny jeans
I wrote this post after I found a photo of me wearing skinny jeans had been posted to a fatphobic facebook group. It was republished on Jezebel and I found me a whole bunch of new readers (hi!)

No more Frock Watch Mia, please.
A plea to the chairperson of the National Body Image Advisory Board, Mia Freedman, who runs body and fashion shaming posts on her blog. This was reposted in full on Mia’s site with “pure fucking tripe” added at the bottom by Mia’s assistant Lana. Mamamia is considering running advertorial content by a weight loss company. Mia Freedman clearly knows nil about body image and actively participates in making people feel bad about their bodies.

Confessions of a former snarker.
Following up the Frock Watch saga, I decided to publicly admit that I have participated in hurtful behaviour by snarking people based on their bodies and what they wear. Admitting you are wrong is not the end of the world, it’s just the decent thing to do.

My feral leghair, and why I’m going to grow it.
Wherein I decide that my body hair is mine to do with as I please, after I saw a segment on The Gruen Transfer about the marketing campaign in 1915 to get women to shave their armpits.

Performing beauty, editing out my flaws.
I still feel quite raw about this post. I have scarred and blemished skin, and I have been wearing makeup to cover it up for over 15 years. Beauty is a performance, a ritual and a burden to me, and I talk about feeling like a liar when I use makeup and use Photoshop to fix my skin.

<img alt="" src="http://www.definatalie.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/fat-arse-500x353.png" class="aligncenter" alt="An illustrated speech bubble that says "Does my fat arse look fat in this?" width="500" height="353" />

Fatshion and Activism

DIY Project – Fringe Skirt
Make a cute swirly, flappy fringed skirt out of t-shirts!

The best argument against the evidence of democracy in fashion is a conversation with a fat woman.
I talk about feeling othered as a fat woman within the fashion world, particularly after I went to a few events and felt very odd not having the “right” clothes and hair. For all the talk about blogging heralding the democratisation of fashion, well… I just don’t think it’s there yet and I doubt it will be for a while when a whole bunch of people are excluded from participation.

Rejecting the notion of the flattering outfit.
If you’re a person who doesn’t have an “ideal” body, you’ll be familiar with the word “flattering” and how it acts to erase bits of your body. In this post I write about how I actively reject the practice of flattering as a way of finding acceptance of my body.

Lane Bryant, your market is changing #teamfance
Someone in charge of Lane Bryant’s twitter account took umbrage at my reclaiming of the word “fat” and teaming it with “arse”. Amazingly, twitter’s fat brigade fought back!

#teamfance is the best team.
Photos of some fabulous people wearing my fat stuff!

Ridiculous outfit, serious topic.
Talking about fatshion blogging as a way of normalising bodies that are made invisible in mainstream culture.

Help me get to the fat studies conference.
After being invited to present at the Fat Studies: A Critical Dialogue conference in Sydney I realised I didn’t have enough money to get there. So many people donated so I could fly down there and speak about fat embodiment on the internet, and it was really freaking amazing.

You Sound Fat: Fat Embodiment Online
I made the paper I presented at the fat studies conference available in text and video format.

Reflections on and photos from the fat studies conference.
This conference blew my mind, and it was amazing to be present at the first ever fat studies conference in Australia. So many of us from all over Australia (and the world!) met for the first time and being amongst community was especially enthralling. Sam Murray tells me the conference will be an annual event, so I encourage Aussie fats to get there (I want to be there too!) in 2011.

Thirty and angry and fabulous, darling.
Musings on turning thirty, wearing clothes and being passionate and angry.

As my year closes, I am struggling with mental illness and I think it’s going to be something that stretches into my 2011. My anger at the way mental illness is treated in our culture has been renewed, and I want to be really candid about how I navigate this episode because people with mental illness are frequently silenced and dismissed. Sometimes I feel like I’m being a bad blogger by being so confessional, I feel guilt that I don’t have regular content and that I am often pissed off, but this place is my platform and I must remind myself that if I don’t speak my truth then no one will.

Lately I have felt like the reason why I don’t get the opportunities that other bloggers get is because I am candid and very critical of a capitalist culture that ignores so many people. I took part in one blogging advertorial campaign this year, and I did it because I’d never done it before and because I had anxiety about traveling alone that I wanted to confront. It was a lot of work and probably didn’t compensate me for the work I did, the time I spent on it and the work I had to give up in order to participate. So, I will probably run ads next year but I will also be very careful about which campaigns to take part in, and considering I am a blogger who primarily writes about fatshion I doubt I will be considered for very many of those campaigns.

Next year I want more fun and challenge. I want to travel interstate even more and maybe even overseas for the first time (I don’t even have a passport!); I want to build on my speaking and writing achievements; and I would love to hold a solo art exhibition. There are things I didn’t quite finish off this year too. I wanted to put out a body image zine but it involved a lot of drawing and dealing with some very complex issues, so I had to put it aside. There was also that dress I wanted to scale up for plus sizes but I realised I didn’t have the skills!

I’m not the kind to make resolutions, but I am going to commit myself to self care, challenge and personal development. If I slip up, I’m going to treat myself kindly and try again; and when I achieve things I’m going to take a moment and congratulate myself. Here’s a list of things I am proud I achieved in 2010:

Published in a few books and zines: Semi Permanent, Curvy, Hair ‘em Scare ‘em.

Had a blog post syndicated on Jezebel.

Discovered I had over 1500 fans.

Flew interstate by myself to attend events.

Got my poster for Finders Keepers in Frankie (inside full back page!)

Exhibited my work in a few group shows.

Drew lots of commissioned stuff and designed an EP cover and band posters.

Saw the movie I drew a prop for.

Spoke at the fat studies conference and felt like a Bonafide Fat Activist.

Was more conscious of my digestion and decided to go vegetarian. Good decision :D

Started going to the gym on my terms.

I hope 2011 is filled with opportunities and excitement for you. Dudley the unicorn says, “be fancy.”
xoxo

Even though I’m not big into Christmas I do like spending time with family and taking photos because Mum usually does pretty decorations and we’re all in the same location. This year it was awesome because we have our new camera and while I’m sure my photos aren’t that great, it’s good to have an opportunity to use it and practice.

I like to post photos of the Australian Christmas experience because lots of my northern hemisphere friends just can’t conceive of us celebrating the day in shorts and thongs! In my family at least, we don’t really eat much heavy winter food that is so typically eaten in the northern hemisphere and instead we eat barbecued prawns, cold meat, salads and what not however I think I did spy roast chicken and pork too. Since I have been vegetarian this year my Mum was a bit baffled as to what to feed me, but I had some lovely green salad and waldorf salad with a roast vegetable pastry concoction. It was great!

Today is the 23rd of December, the day that people like me celebrate Festivus! I haven’t put up a tree for the last few years because I’m kind of grinchy and I hate tinsel. If you read my last post you’ll know I’m not a huge fan of consumerism, and you’ll be correct in assuming that my disdain is especially strong at this time of year when the air is thick with the fug of spruikers and carpark rage.

Today I put up my Festivus pole and while it’s not a true aluminium pole it’s still in keeping with the austere spirit of the day because it’s recycled; I used the cardboard tube from a bolt of fabric and wrapped it in tin foil. Despite its ad hoc nature it does have an impressive strength to weight ratio.

In keeping with my frugal nature, all the gifts we give are wrapped in brown paper but I’ve also wrapped them in the wool I bought when I was convinced I was going to crochet every day for the rest of my life. (I have managed to make two hats and a scarf.)

But the gift giving isn’t just restricted to my immediate family, no! I have also made a charitable donation in all of your names to The Human Fund. People love money and I’m sure they are grateful for this most benevolent present.

Festivus has a number of traditions, and one of my favourites is The Airing of Grievances. Considering our household only has two people, well, it can get a bit petty… but traditions are traditions. At dinner I plan on expressing to Nick in the most plainest of words how annoyed I am when he leaves the dishcloth in the sink and misplaces my possessions. I have other grievances to air but I’m not going to plan this speech, I’m comfortable with winging it.

After dinner we’ll enjoy Feats of Strength, however since we’re a pretty egalitarian household the bout might require some negotiation. You see, Festivus can only come to a close when the head of the household’s skull is pinned to the floor and since Nick and I both consider ourselves to be the boss Festivus might drag on all year!

PS: Love you Nick!
PPS: I hope everyone enjoys their respective holidays!

Coffee is the best way to get a Natalie to start the day! We had our Saturday morning all planned out, we were going to check out the new Coorparoo Markets and then move on to Finders Keepers but parking at the rejuvenated old Myer Coorparoo building AND breakfast in our tummies were seriously lacking, so we decided to have our most important meal at Cafeine.

This mushroom and feta omelette with pesto stuffed tomatoes is the best.

After breakfast we went to the Coorparoo Markets, finally, but we didn’t take photos because we were busy checking it all out. There’s a level of random market thingies and doodads (including tiny helicopters that are amazing) and a level of fresh produce. Horah for close fresh food markets!

After our local jaunt we headed to The Old Museum for the Finders Keepers markets!

I love this building and the surrounding gardens, it’s such a nice venue for a market.

I wore clothes!

THE POM POMS! The colours are right out of the poster I illustrated for the markets!

I’m not kidding, I want these for my birthday party :D

This is the okt-ober dee stall, and see that cute handbag? This one? I LOVE IT. Oh my goodness it’s the cutest.

Seriously, POM POMS.

Nick is staying strong in the face of craft and whimsy overload.

And then we went over the Story Bridge and tended some errands. Saturday success!

Five lessons learned

1. Social media is awesome fun, but social media + touching content = viral phenomenon. I posted this short film by Josh Beattie on my Tumblr last week after his Mum shared it on Twitter, and as of this morning it had 28k likes and reblogs and 134,952 views on YouTube. That’s incredible. PS: Josh is 17!
2. I have never been comfortable saying that I absolutely know something for certain. I have so much to learn about everything.
3. When I assert myself, other people will not like it. This conflicts with what I’ve been taught as a woman with regard to keeping everyone happy.
4. As a person with privilege I should never seek to speak for other people. Let each person speak for themselves as I would prefer to speak for myself. When a person offers their truth, do not dismiss it.
5. Let life be random and unplanned sometimes. Fun things happen!

Five favourites

1. Lush’s Lovely Jubblies. I don’t believe it “firms” saggy skin, but I do believe it starts my days off with a sense of happiness and optimism.
2. The Tea Centre’s Tea for Sunday blend. If you are in the Brisbane CBD, go have afternoon tea at the Tea Centre. The staff are gorgeous!
3. Whip My Hair by Willow Smith. Life’s theme song right now.
4. eBay… I have fallen back in love with you!
5. Everyone who pre-ordered a fat necklace. There were so many of you!!! It makes me feel good about the state of activism :D

Amelia Pontes has been doing this thing for the last few weeks called 5 Lessons Learned and 5 Favourites and I really like it as a meditation on the week gone. I might respectfully rip her off and do my own reflection here… and I think it would be awesome if lots of beautiful, self-aware bloggers did it too!

<img src="http://www.definatalie.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/IMG_0624a-650x433.jpg" alt="Photo of a red teacup with big white polkadots filled with black tea.
5 Lessons Learned

1. It’s hard to stand up for myself. And that’s ok, I’ve just got to keep practicing.
2. I’m still afraid of rejection and I keep pre-empting rejection. It’s a self fulfilling prophesy!
3. Don’t consult Dr Google. Dr Google got his qualification on the internet.
4. When I get overwhelmed I need to drink some tea and breathe (of course it’s preferable to breathe while making tea) and catch my thoughts and turn them into to-do lists.
5. Write lists all the time.

1. Drinking wine with friends, the opening night audience, cast and crew of [Title of Show] at the Powerhouse. Brisbane has so many lovely moments. They are usually hidden and secret moments and thus are especially rewarding.
2. Parcels! Do I really need to explain further?
3. Crossing things off my list and not being disappointed in myself when I only cross a few things off a day. Achievements are achievements.
4. Comfortable and cute shoes (pictured). They are Softspots, one of the only truly actually comfortable brands of shoes I have ever bought. I’ve gotta look after my feet, with the T1D and all!
5. Hal-coholic and her fantastic shoes that I can never hope to wear. I live vicariously through this blog.

Will you reflect on your 5 lessons learned and 5 favourites? (PSSST: I think you should.)

My sister got married yesterday (which is why the desktop isn’t up yet, sorry!) so I want to share some photos with you. Where my wedding was more unconventional in its styling, Michelle and Jordan’s wedding was more traditional with the big white dress and veil as well as dark suits for the groom and his men. Lemme just wack the photos up so I don’t bore you :P

Of course you want to know what I wore, am I right? Here are the details:
Dress: Collection from Myer (Thank you to Kiki for sending it to me!)
Bolero: City Chic
Shoes: Evans
Necklace and clutch: borrowed from Mum
Bracelets: City Chic
Rings: City Chic and Evans
Nails: MOI!

If foot agony is the measure of a good night let’s just say Michelle and Jordan’s reception scored off the charts and required an ice bath followed by a warm water bath (and many tears.) There are so many more photos I wanted to share but I didn’t want to bombard you with my (potentially boring) family stuff, but I really wanted to blog about this happy occasion!

I’ll endeavour to get the desktop up tomorrow, but ALSO! I got my Beth Ditto stuff from Evans finally… I haven’t had a second to try the polka dot dress, silver mary-janes or the grey skirt on yet, but I LOVE the drapey black t-shirt. I can’t even describe it.

Last night I put the finishing touches on my presentation for the Fat Studies Conference! I scanned a bunch of photos and this was one of my favourites – I got very sunburnt on year 12 camp and one of my friends put a spider in my lap when she came across the photo in my senior year scrapbook. It’s kind of how I feel right now: totally freaking out! I’m speaking on Saturday and Nick will be taking a video of my presentation so you won’t miss out on my awkward oratory skills. I’m much more comfortable writing – I guess that’s why I’m a blogger! I’ll also be posting my paper here, I’m hoping I don’t get so nervous that I completely stray from it in my presentation.

What I am looking forward to is meeting a bunch of rad people!!! I envision a lot of fun and bonding, I’m so optimistic about our little fat acceptance movement in Australia.

This morning four of the five lovely members of Charlie Mayfair came over for tea and cake. I thought I’d break out some lemon sour cream cake (it’s so good that this is the SECOND cake I’ve made in the last few weeks!) and for the first time ever the red polka dot tea set Mum gave me!

After chatting about people wanting to eat their CD, pets with human names and Muse’s astronomical live show budget the guys went and fetched some instruments and serenaded Nick and I in our lounge room with a NEW song. What an excellent Sunday morning!

Some people have asked me if they can buy Charlie Mayfair’s debut EP online, and now you can! Go listen, it’s lovely music.

Considering that I’m an artist, I have an embarrassingly small collection of art by other people in my house! The above framed drawings were bought a little while ago, but I’ve only just gotten around to finding frames for them. The print on the left is by Catherine Campbell, and the original drawing on the right is by Mel Stringer. Both of these Australian artists really inspire me and now I’m happy to have their work up at home.

Would you like to see the other artworks I have up? Come on a little tour of my dimly lit unit, photographed with a camera that does not like dim lighting!

My Nana did this tapestry of a Mary Cassatt painting. I always loved it as a kid so I was really pleased when she gave it to me!

This is a print of Nasturtiums by Tudor St George Tucker, another piece given to me by Nana. It’s quite badly faded, but I still like it because it reminds me of my Mum saying “Don’t cast NASTURTIUMS on me!”

I bought this print a few years ago, and I have no idea who the artist is or the name of the piece. If any of you know, please help!

This Rob Ryan tea towel came with the anniversary issue of Inside Out, and today after saving the tea towel from being used as an actual tea towel *death stare at Nick* I decided to shove it in this frame. It’s too small, but at least my lovely Rob Ryan tea towel won’t get put in the wash!

Do you have lots of art up in your house?
