Friday Fance: A pastel mood

This collection of photos is all pale and pastelly by coincidence because I’m not normally drawn to lighter hues. I am very much enjoying all these things right now though!

This is but a sampling of Julie Moon’s lovely sculptural pieces, you really ought to go check her portfolio out! There’s so much stuff I like, from the shapes to the fine and doodly details.

Isn’t this the most adorable outfit ever? cocorosa posted this to chictopia, and I think it’s the best.

Hello, cupcake jars! Photo by earlymourning.

I would love to have a little space like this but it certainly wouldn’t stay neat and cute because I am a whirlwind of destruction. I wish I knew where this came from, so if you know please tell me!

I hope to walk down an avenue lined with cherry blossoms in bloom one day in my life. This lovely photo is by Satomi Shirai, and it was taken in New York.

Friday Fance: The Colour of Your Fance

I came across The Colour thanks to Mishy, and spent a good 45 minutes browsing through the collection of fantastic Australian creative talent. I thought I’d do an art/ illustration/ design curation of fance based on talent I found through The Colour.

Laura La Rayna, a performer particularly noted for her aerial ring prowess. Laura worked with Brisbane institution the Vulcana Women’s Circus and now lives in Melbourne.

I have known Lilly Piri as an online friend for a few years now, which is funny considering she used to live just a little bit away from me! She’s now in Heidelberg with her husband and fellow awesome illustrator Heiko.

Sarah Hickey’s work is new to me, but I was instantly drawn to the bright colours and the clashing textures in her work. This piece in particular is very Mucha-esque but a lot of her work is inspired by Catholic iconography.

Matt Huynh is a Sydney-based illustrator who self publishes comics. I really liked this piece in particular because it evokes a sense of panic and loss of control within me. Not a particularly fancy theme, I know, but it’s illustrated beautifully.

Ahh Kat Macleod, I will forever envy your loose yet elegant style! Kat is one of the luminaries of the Australian illustration scene in recent years, and has done an incredible amount of really fabulous and consistent work.

Go check out The Colour – you can collect your favourite images and even contribute Australian creative talent yourself. I think it could be an amazing local ffffound-like resource!

Friday Fance: Guest Fance by Memily

Hello! It’s my second last day in Melbourne and I’m actually writing this from the past. I hope Future Natalie is having an excellent time! Today’s Fance has been curated by my fantastic friend Memily, who has exceptional taste and is a fellow practitioner of the fance.

This mer-lady in was sourced from Abigail’s treasures. It reminds me of a childhood I spent pretending I was a mer-lady myself, except I’d wear my daggy clothes in the pool and swish them around… instead of voluminous, expensive, silk dresses.

These frames were drawn by she.likes.cute on a wall that was cleverly covered with magneted paint first!

Quoth Mem, “I pine for the day that I own the walls I live between. I’m going to make those walls FANCY, you better believe.” You can buy this wall decal from walldecor on etsy!

This gorgeous decor photograph with such amazing light fittings and wallpaper was sourced from here but was sadly uncredited!

I’m going to leave you with the words of Memily, “Goddamn you, modcloth. Children would fit into your clothes easier than grown women.” I am certainly looking forward to the day that ModCloth bring out that plus size line! (And I hope they don’t cheat with junior plus sizes either!)

Friday Fance: Leveling up your fance

When case-making caddisflies are in their larval stage they gather material around them to build a protective housing. Hubert Duprat wondered if he could control the materials surrounding caddisflies so he could turn them into little jewelers, and it worked! These cases are made from gold flakes, semi-precious and precious stones as well as the caddisflies’ own silk. Read more about these fascinating insects.

I love lampshades, and remember running my fingers through the fringing in my Nana’s many gorgeous lampshades. She sold them all but I still have the base of one of my favourites. I need to find something like this shade to cap it off! Photo by Yvette Inufio.

Is this a vertical garden? Let’s pretend for this purpose that it is. I am fascinated by vertical gardens and hope to create my own one day. Photo via Apartment Therapy.

Are you dizzy yet? I am pretty dizzy after looking at 101 of these spiral staircases on Web Urbanist! When I have a mansion most of it will be taken up with giant spiral staircase that has the most ornately shaped balustrade creeping up to the top and I’ll lie at the bottom and imagine that it’s a giant sky snail.

Hellooooo, this needs to be on my couch. Under my queenly butt. PillowPalooza make this and many other fancy custom-made comfort devices.

Love for naKIMuli

I came across naKIMuli via the fabulously talented Nikki of Decadent Industries. NaKIMuli’s designer Tennille is a wonderful bright spark, designing crazy awesome clothing for people who don’t mind showing off their bodies in fabulous body con garments. The most refreshing part? She does a plus size line as well! HORAH!

I’m expecting big things from this label, so make sure you keep an eye out.

Friday Fance: We Can Fance

The Queensland State Library has a flickr account that they constantly update with more and more vintage photographs of life in Queensland. I am fascinated by it, and loved this particular photograph. A commenter pointed out that the photo was entirely staged as none of the fruit are mature enough to pick and the woman is dressed far too fancy to be getting her hands dirty in the red soil!

I’ve just finished watching the last of the Life TV series by David Attenborough, and was taken by the underwater cinematography. Coral is fascinating and wonderful to look at but also a very necessary and living part of the ecosystem along the Great Barrier Reef. It makes me sad that it’s under threat because of bleaching caused by climate change.

Rita Moreno’s character Anita was my favourite in West Side Story. I loved how full of life and strength she was and the scene where she and Maria are singing A Boy Like That/ I Have a Love always makes me tear up!

Gosh I love Anita in this scene!

And to leave you on a less sentimental note… the kick-arse Leslie Hall from Leslie and the Ly’s. Whenever I think about the Genesis of Fance, I have to credit Leslie. I remember seeing her amazing gem sweaters and listening to her hilarious songs on myspace ages ago. I think she is pretty much one of the Godmothers of Fance.

Friday Fance: Crowdfanced

I’ve had a bit of a bummer of a week with some sad things happening that have disturbed my fance. It seems that when I’m busy and sad I don’t really collect many images, so I mostly crowdsourced the Fance this week on tumblr and this is the result…

I found this on Tumblr and there’s no word on who the group are. They are infinitely fancy though! It was originally posted by bitter and thirsty, but I found it by way of I love fat.

I just love the all black with the explosion of colour at the collar. Via Copenhagen Street Style.

Dior is never not fancy. The Cruella hair is amazing, I have a thing for silver streaks! Thanks Heidi for submitting this.

I think umbrellas are great, in rain and shine. This one is freaking adorable and craps all over my animal print one! Lulu Guinness have heaps of other fancy brollies too (love the cameo one too). Thank you ukulady!

I think this gorgeous building is in the running to be my place of residence. If only human eyes could see infrared! This photo was taken by Gian Guido Zurli and I found it via Kim.

Here’s to next week being 20 times better!

Friday fance: fance of the now

Trilogy was listed as one of i love typography’s favourite fonts of 2009, and with 103 variants it has incredible flexibility. This sample demonstrates some of that fancy flexibility!

Shannon Fricke is one of my favourite stylists. I love the way she uses colour and pattern!

This cute cardboard bedroom suite was posted on Tumblr, but with no attribution I can’t find the creator of this and move into their house :(

I think what I really like about this photo is the brogues. I really want to buy some but I can’t find any in a wide fitting! The lovely photo is by nicole ☆ lynn.

Because Yoko is the best. Even Nick, a massive Beatles fan, admitted that he likes her more and more.

Aurora Robson’s studio is full of these magical air born clumps of recycled bottles. Totally inspiring! More photos at C-MONSTER.net.

Friday fance: The Fance Is Back In Town

The Fance is back! I’m going to start curating Fance posts from the images that I collect on my tumblr, if y’all don’t mind. 2010 is looking fabulous and busy and finding extra content is getting to be a luxury these days!

V Loves U Just The Way UR spread by Terry Tsiolis
This shoot is fantastic because it doesn’t include one body type and exclude the others – it reflects the reality that we all have different shaped bodies that do wonderful things.

Ice lantern by Design*Sponge
I wish I lived somewhere where these wouldn’t melt within half an hour! They’re gorgeous.

A page from Stella Im Hultberg’s sketchbook.

This brooch by Maria Cristina Bellucci is made out of reclaimed colour pencils. So beautiful!

This photo is from Plus d’idees que d’argent. What a stunning location!

The Friday unFance

Sometimes things are just the opposite of fance, and they make me grumpy. This is a post dedicated to a few of those things!

fuck censorship
Censorship is a terrible direction for the Australian government to go, and I am very disappointed and worried about the future. The clean feed is claiming to be about protecting children but it is a very slippery slope, and once it is installed future governments probably won’t do a thing about removing it. My worst fear is that it will be a victim of “feature creep” and the features that creep in will go further towards censoring dissenting opinion rather than protecting Australians.

Animal scales
The Animal Weighing Scales look cute, but read the product description. It’s still all about losing weight, whatever whimsical unit of measurement you put on it.

Blingy iPhone cases
For something a little bit more light hearted – super spangly iPhone cases are not fancy. Don’t even go there!

Upcycle!
Image via Crafting a Green World
Packaging waste really bothers me, and there will be a metric buttload of it this month. The end of December is probably going to be an awesome month to skulk around collecting boxes and waste wrapping paper for your crafty upcycling purposes!

I have to end on a fancy note to offset all the unfance – so I present my newest hero Kelli Jean Drinkwater!
