On my walls

Considering that I’m an artist, I have an embarrassingly small collection of art by other people in my house! The above framed drawings were bought a little while ago, but I’ve only just gotten around to finding frames for them. The print on the left is by Catherine Campbell, and the original drawing on the right is by Mel Stringer. Both of these Australian artists really inspire me and now I’m happy to have their work up at home.

My Nana did this tapestry of a Mary Cassatt painting. I always loved it as a kid so I was really pleased when she gave it to me!

This is a print of Nasturtiums by Tudor St George Tucker, another piece given to me by Nana. It’s quite badly faded, but I still like it because it reminds me of my Mum saying “Don’t cast NASTURTIUMS on me!”

I bought this print a few years ago, and I have no idea who the artist is or the name of the piece. If any of you know, please help!

This Rob Ryan tea towel came with the anniversary issue of Inside Out, and today after saving the tea towel from being used as an actual tea towel *death stare at Nick* I decided to shove it in this frame. It’s too small, but at least my lovely Rob Ryan tea towel won’t get put in the wash!

Friday Fance: The Colour of Your Fance

I came across The Colour thanks to Mishy, and spent a good 45 minutes browsing through the collection of fantastic Australian creative talent. I thought I’d do an art/ illustration/ design curation of fance based on talent I found through The Colour.

Laura La Rayna, a performer particularly noted for her aerial ring prowess. Laura worked with Brisbane institution the Vulcana Women’s Circus and now lives in Melbourne.

I have known Lilly Piri as an online friend for a few years now, which is funny considering she used to live just a little bit away from me! She’s now in Heidelberg with her husband and fellow awesome illustrator Heiko.

Sarah Hickey‘s work is new to me, but I was instantly drawn to the bright colours and the clashing textures in her work. This piece in particular is very Mucha-esque but a lot of her work is inspired by Catholic iconography.

Matt Huynh is a Sydney-based illustrator who self publishes comics. I really liked this piece in particular because it evokes a sense of panic and loss of control within me. Not a particularly fancy theme, I know, but it’s illustrated beautifully.

Ahh Kat Macleod, I will forever envy your loose yet elegant style! Kat is one of the luminaries of the Australian illustration scene in recent years, and has done an incredible amount of really fabulous and consistent work.

Go check out The Colour – you can collect your favourite images and even contribute Australian creative talent yourself. I think it could be an amazing local ffffound-like resource!

Original art works now for sale on ArtFire

I’ve just opened up a shop on ArtFire.com to sell my original art works. This is something I’ve been meaning to do for a long time, but I kept putting it off because I have assumed that no one will want to buy anything! I don’t want to believe that any longer! Prove me wrong and bolster my self esteem :P

I have listed eight pieces right now, but I have another three framed pieces to add as well as a bunch of drawings. All of these pieces are just taking up room in my office and I’d love to see them adopted by people who will hang them up and love them.

The other reason why I am motivated to sell my originals is because I want to start working in different media and experimenting with new things but I simply can’t afford it. If you adopt one of my drawings or paintings, you will be encouraging and prolonging my career as an artist and patronising me – in a good way, hahaha!

Go forth! Purchase some of my original art and fancy up your walls.

The Illustrators at KILN – starts this Friday night!

I just picked up three of my beautifully framed pieces from Bizarre Framing and dropped them into KILN Gallery for The Illustrators show, a group exhibition I’m so chuffed to be part of. I saw Nigel Buchanan‘s gorgeous giclee prints lined up against the wall, and said hello to Shaun Campbell and his fancy car as he was bumping in an installation. The show also includes Jim Tsinganos, Brett Lethbridge, Ron Monnier, Courtney Brims and Lucia Masciullo – some incredible names in Australian illustration that I’m rather honoured to be included with!

Now I shall present to you a taste of The Illustrators!

Peppermint Mag Issue 2 and a new blog design!

definatalie.com has been redesigned and it only took months and months to get it up! Apparently there’s a problem with IE6 that Nick is going to look at tonight, but I heartily suggest you download Firefox or the latest IE anyway.

Peppermint magazine issue 2 is landing soon! The cover features a beautiful illustration of Summer Rayne Oakes by the fabulous Ms Bec Winnel. I did the curly lettering on the front, but it pales into insignificance in comparison with Bec’s drawing! :P

I feel bad that I haven’t blogged for a while, it’s just we were getting all the wrinkles out of the new layout and Nick had told me that things might be lost in the transition (I moved hosts due to issues with my old host, thank Rod for that!) but none of the comments seem to have been misplaced! Yay! I have lots of things to tell you, stay tuned!

If you haven’t heard of Ghostpatrol, definitely check out this video. I have admired his style for a few years, and I really respect how many mediums he has crossed! I took a few photos of his graffiti work while we were down in Melbourne in December, I got such a kick out of spotting it too!

Keeping this entry on a “video” vibe, I just had a quick video chat with Lee Rubenstein and Ward Jenkins, it was really cool slash intimidating :P

Audrey Kawasaki’s Drawing Room show

I thought I’d post some of the work that was in the Drawing Room show which was curated by Audrey Kawasaki. I was really really excited when I first heard this show announced, because three of my favourite Australian artists were included.

I really really really really want to get to a point where my work is good enough to join these lofty ranks, I admire the hell out of these women and their work.

And this is the amazing drawing room that Audrey created in the gallery window – she said it ended up being very similar to her room!

I am so lucky to have such gorgeous and talented friends! This photo is by Kate O’Brien and my friend Jilly is also the model! Erin Gallienne did hair and make up, and while I don’t know her, she’s pretty damned gifted too!

I get really excited about some of the stuff that is coming out of Brisbane, but disappointed when there isn’t very much airplay. Kate deserves awesome props – she has an uncanny knack for styling, a discerning eye for colour, and fabulous post processing skills that set her apart from other art photographers.

This is also a really cool example of how my Starburst vectors can be used in photography!

I stumbled across Catherine‘s work the other night, and ran rampant through her flickr account, blindly favouriting things left and right. She is a Melbourne artist who creates mixed media ephemeral pieces combining texture, illustration, pretty paper and colour. She sells delicious things on etsy too! I will be spending some quality time picking out the pieces I’m going to purchase and cherish!

Australia has some wonderful illustrators – I plan on exposing lots of them here!
