Fanciful Friday

I’ve been slaving away over cupcakes which turned out to be complete duds after I left out the eggs, so I have baking on the brain. Today’s Fanciful Friday is going to be a baking edition!

• A hootie cake! This gorgeous owl cake was made by lady_lala “for a nice boy”. Awww man! I really want to make cupcake owls!

• Superhero groom’s cupcakes! I’m not quite sure what the tradition is with groom’s cakes because I’ve never heard of it before, but these look amazing! There are heaps more if you go over to lookcupcake’s flickr!

• I love how these cupcakes by Sugar & Meringue are all decorated differently… it makes me think that not all cupcakes need to be uniform and precisely like each other, especially when they could all have cute designs like these!

Bakerella always deserves a mention when it comes to baking… and these apple cake pops look fantastic! I’ve never even seen coloured candy melts in Australia, but I want to try these one day. I wonder if you can make the cake balls out of an apple sponge cake? I think I’d really crave the apple flavour if I tried to make these.

• Panda cakes! These were made by Coco Cake Cupcakes.

Emo birthday slice for Sam
• I’ll leave you with the emo slice I made for my brother. I’ve realised that the red velvet recipe I posted here a few months ago is missing something crucial… the bit where you add eggs! I’ll amend the recipe eventually – I hope I haven’t completely ruined anyone’s cupcake snacking plans! Basically what I did to salvage this is mix a bunch of cream cheese into the crumbled cupcakes, spread it over a slice pan and then ice it. The “Emo Bigotry” design is an in-joke ;)

Don’t forget! If you like baking stuff, you can follow our Eat, Sleep, Cupcake tumblr blog.

When I grow up I want to be a dessert chef

It seems heaps of people are getting in to MasterChef Australia and I try to watch it every few nights just to see if they’re being taught any new recipes, but often I completely forget. Despite this the show has inspired me to cook more desserty style dishes. I’ve been perfecting the cupcake thing for a while, but it’s nice to try something different! Though first, we have cupcakes, because… they are delicious and I can’t quit them

Mother's day drawings

I have discovered that a big part of what I do involves buttloads of time and love. People must think I’m crazy for spending hours drawing tiny lines or baking things from scratch, but it’s one of the only ways my primitive consciousness knows how to properly convey love and affection. A small part of me frets that people don’t value what I do – I worry that people throw away the things I make for them as if they were Hallmark products, but in the end I have no control over that. The only thing I really have control over is my love, and even if they did throw away my gifts I’d still spend time making them.

Red Velvet Cupcakes

I have been incredibly busy lately, which is awesome, but I fell behind in making cards for Mother’s Day. So yesterday was spent drawing furiously… and making cupcakes. I finished icing the cupcakes and gluing the cards about half an hour before we left to have lunch at my sister’s place today… I was frazzled and half resentful because I feared how my gifts would be received. I needn’t have worried – my family always appreciate what I do, and I am so grateful for that because otherwise I’d be one bitter headcase :P

Mother's day drawings

Thanks to the women in my life, including most of all – my Mum and Nana. You are brilliant, and my very limited vocabulary can not express how much I am indebted to you for helping me become who I am.

Red Velvet Cupcakes Recipe

If you want to show someone you really think they are tops but you can’t express it in words, print off this recipe and make them some amazing cupcakes. They’ll get it :)

Eat, Sleep, Cupcake!

Tim Tam cupcakes with Cedar Creme frosting

I bought the domain eatsleepcupcake.com to start a group authored cupcake tumblr – for people who make cupcakes and like to show them off. Unfortunately I failed to realise that the submission tool used around tumblr is only for private beta testers, not for me, so my plan collapsed :(

Eat, Sleep, Cupcake is now running as a group tumblr, authored by Kathleen, Heather and myself. You’ll see photos of our baking, and our inspirations, as well as recipes we want to try out!

Milo cupcakes with Milo and condensed milk icing

These were the most delicious Milo cupcakes ever, and the goodies in the first photo are cupcakes I’ve just finished making today! They’ve got crushed Tim Tam bits in them, and they’re iced with Cedar Creme liqueur.

So yeh, you should follow Eat, Sleep, Cupcake. The End!

If I had a cupcake shop…

And yea, Ellie looked upon those cupcakes

If I had a cupcake shop, I would have so much fun designing the packaging. Actually, I don’t want to own a cupcake shop really… I just want to design fun stuff. So I guess I’m in the perfect job already. ha!

Ellie's birthday cupcakes
I made some cupcakes for my friend Ellie’s birthday!

And yea, Ellie looked upon those cupcakes
I think that smug little grin means she liked them :P

The Cupcakening

Today I went to a cupcake picnic, organised by the lovely @shique! We got to sample one from The Cupcake Parlour and another from Poppy Cakes. The cupcake I had from The Cupcake Parlour was a vanilla with this blobby blue icing, I found the cupcake to be amazing and moist but the icing was far too sugary for me! From Poppy Cakes, I had a lemon poppy seed cupcake and thought the cake was dry but the icing was beautiful. I couldn’t eat all of the cupcakes, much to my husband’s delight.

I look kind of obnoxious, sorry about that :P

When words fail, there are cupcakes…

Peanut butter frosted cupcakes

Lately I have been pretty busy and preoccupied with other things, and I feel bad that I have neglected my bloggerly duties. Sometimes, you get into funks and just don’t know what to write about! I am a very visual person, and often I feel like I could just communicate via images but for some reason I don’t think that’s good enough for this blog.

I’m dragging myself out of this blogging rut, and posting my latest creation: peanut butter frosted cupcakes. They’re delicious!

I loved cupcakes before they were cool

And also this – a very tongue in cheek stab at indie poseurs :)
You can buy it on a t-shirt or as a print!

Defining moments in baking…

Brain Cakes!

I am not a cook, and usually I’m not even remotely interested in baking but on the odd occasion I will cook cupcakes for people that I adore. My friend had her birthday party last night and so I decided to make these braincakes for her to celebrate our love of the undead! I was pretty proud of the outcome, but professional cake makers will probably baulk!

My braincakes consist of:
Cupcake - based on the vanilla cupcake recipe from the Crababble Bakery Cupcake Cookbook
Intestine icing – white chocolate with lots of red food colouring
Brains and blood – marzipan and strawberry ice cream topping

I just had one then and it was pretty delicious, though I couldn’t eat all the marzipan brain :(
Everyone seemed to love them last night, though I couldn’t bring myself to eat one after baking them all afternoon!
