<p>I don&#8217;t really do Christmas and it&#8217;s hard to know what kind of colours will best suit all around the globe for these desktops, but I settled on a lovely turquoise, coral and canvas colour scheme for December&#8217;s desktop because it&#8217;s one of my favourites. It reminds me of the beach&#8230; hot sand, cool water and sunburn!</p>
<p>This design is actually going to be my last in the monthly desktops. Over the last two years I have drawn 24, can you believe it? It&#8217;s been a fantastic exercise in finding my aesthetic, without it I really don&#8217;t think I&#8217;d have found a way to integrate my drawing style with my graphic design style. In the future I will probably design desktops when I have down time, and they&#8217;ll be the kind of thing you can use any time of the year! I may even revisit some of my favourite desktops from the past two years and make them appropriate all year round. </p>
<p>So go download a resolution!<br />

Coffee is the best way to get a Natalie to start the day! We had our Saturday morning all planned out, we were going to check out the new Coorparoo Markets and then move on to Finders Keepers but parking at the rejuvenated old Myer Coorparoo building AND breakfast in our tummies were seriously lacking, so we decided to have our most important meal at Cafeine. </p>
<p><img src="http://www.definatalie.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/IMG_2236-21-650x433.jpg" alt="Photo of my breakfast, a mushroom and feta omelette in a souffle dish with three pieces of bread and some tomatoes with pesto sitting on spinach leaves." title="Breakfast" width="650" height="433" class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-3685" /><br />
This mushroom and feta omelette with pesto stuffed tomatoes is the best.</p>
<p>After breakfast we went to the Coorparoo Markets, finally, but we didn&#8217;t take photos because we were busy checking it all out. There&#8217;s a level of random market thingies and doodads (including tiny helicopters that are amazing) and a level of fresh produce. Horah for close fresh food markets!</p>
<p><img src="http://www.definatalie.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/IMG_2316-24-650x433.jpg" alt="Photo of red roses in focus in the foreground with an old red brick building behind them slightly blurry." title="The Old Museum" width="650" height="433" class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-3695" /><br />
After our local jaunt we headed to <a href="http://oldmuseum.org/">The Old Museum</a> for the <a href="http://www.thefinderskeepers.com/">Finders Keepers</a> markets! </p>
<p><img src="http://www.definatalie.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/IMG_2301-19-433x650.jpg" alt="Photo of a large red brick hall entrance with decorative brickwork over arches and around columns. People are coming in and out of the door." title="The Old Museum entrance" width="433" height="650" class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-3692" /><br />
I love this building and the surrounding gardens, it&#8217;s such a nice venue for a market. </p>
<p><img src="http://www.definatalie.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/IMG_2319-251-433x650.jpg" alt="Photo of me against the side of a red brick exhibition building wearing a floral dress with denim cut off shorts. I&#039;m making a pretty goofy face and pose." title="It&#039;s me and I&#039;m wearing clothes again, unsurprisingly." width="433" height="650" class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-3697" /><br />
I wore clothes! </p>
<p><img src="http://www.definatalie.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/IMG_2243-5-650x433.jpg" alt="Photo of large blue, fawn and cream coloured pom poms hanging in a huge bunch from the ceiling of a large room" title="Pom Poms" width="650" height="433" class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-3681" /><br />
THE POM POMS! The colours are right out of <a href="http://www.definatalie.com/2010/09/09/the-finders-keepers-brisbane-and-curvy-2010/">the poster I illustrated</a> for the markets!</p>
<p><img src="http://www.definatalie.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/IMG_2242-4-650x433.jpg" alt="Photo of stained glass windows with mostly purple and lilac coloured glass squares with an odd oranged coloured square here and there." title="The Old Museum" width="650" height="433" class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-3680" /><br />
<img src="http://www.definatalie.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/IMG_2253-7-650x433.jpg" alt="Photo of a large hall with lots of people around looking at cute craft shops. A cluster of huge pom poms hangs from the ceiling in the centre of the very large room." title="The Finders Keepers Brisbane " width="650" height="433" class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-3683" /><br />
I&#8217;m not kidding, I want these for my birthday party :D</p>
<p><img src="http://www.definatalie.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/IMG_2260-10-650x433.jpg" alt="Photo of a hand bag stall in the middle of a large room amongst lots of other crafty stalls and shoppers." title="The Finders Keepers" width="650" height="433" class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-3686" /><br />
This is the <a href="http://www.oktoberdee.com.au">okt-ober dee</a> stall, and see that cute handbag? <a href="http://www.oktoberdee.bigcartel.com/product/pinnafore-satchel-moss-patchwork">This one</a>? I LOVE IT. Oh my goodness it&#8217;s the cutest.</p>
<p><img src="http://www.definatalie.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/IMG_2311-22-650x433.jpg" alt="Photo of large blue, cream and fawn pom poms hanging from the ceiling of a very large room." title="More pom poms!" width="650" height="433" class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-3693" /><br />
Seriously, POM POMS.</p>
<p><img src="http://www.definatalie.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/IMG_2256-8-433x650.jpg" alt="" title="Photo of craft stalls and shoppers lining the side of the balcony at The Old Museum. " width="433" height="650" class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-3684" /><br />

<img src="http://www.definatalie.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/IMG_2283-16-433x650.jpg" alt="Photo of Nick, a pale skinned fat man with an amazing beard, sitting on a hession covered milk crate holding up a large orange and white umbrella." title="Nick&#039;s throne" width="433" height="650" class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-3690" /><br />
Nick is staying strong in the face of craft and whimsy overload.<br />
<img src="http://www.definatalie.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/IMG_2297-181-650x433.jpg" alt="Photo of a large garden bed full of long stemmed purple flowers." title="Some purple flowers and I don&#039;t know what they&#039;re called!" width="650" height="433" class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-3694" /><br />
<img src="http://www.definatalie.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/IMG_2338-27-650x433.jpg" alt="Photo of the Story Bridge while driving over it, the grey steel structure like huge mechano scaffolding arching over the six lane bridge." title="&lt;3 you Brisbane" width="650" height="433" class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-3698" /><br />
And then we went over the Story Bridge and tended some errands. Saturday success!</div>

<p>September is here, only four days late&#8230; can you forgive me?! I hadn&#8217;t forgotten, it&#8217;s just I was busy you see and I have a funny feeling the first few days of the month are going to set the trend for the next few weeks. The colour inspiration is quite obviously taken from a juicy watermelon, one of my favourite fruits of all time. Pretty and delicious!</p>

Even though I&#8217;m a fan of overblown, ridiculously detailed design work I yearn for light, white open spaces. Our kitchen was born in the 1970s, and the brown and muted orange and darkness really bothers me, but we rent so there&#8217;s not much we can do about that! Practically, having a room like this might be a nightmare (depending on how much space you have available and how often you like to dust &#8211; i.e: never for me) but it&#8217;d be an awesome set up for taking outfit photos. Susie Bubble posted these photos of <a href="http://www.stylebubble.co.uk/style_bubble/2010/07/townhouse-escape.html">the Townhouse Escape in London</a> a few days ago, I&#8217;d love to stay there.</p>

<blockquote><p>The Harmonia Macrocosmica is a star atlas written by Andreas Cellarius and published in 1660 by Johannes Janssonius. The first part of the atlas contains copper plate prints depicting the world systems of Claudius Ptolemy, Nicolaus Copernicus and Tycho Brahe. At the end are star maps of the classical and Christian constellations, the latter ones as introduced by Julius Schiller in his Coelum stellatum christianum of 1627.<br />

Jane Austen&#8217;s Fight Club. Posted for the benefit of anyone who hasn&#8217;t seen it on Jezebel yet ;) <a href="http://www.feministe.us/blog/archives/2010/08/01/jane-austens-fight-club/">Chally at Feministe kindly did a transcript</a> for it too!</p>
<p><a href="http://blogs.hbr.org/cs/2010/07/10_reasons_to_stop_apologizing.html">10 Reasons to Stop Apologizing for Your Online Life</a><br />
Here&#8217;s the thing: it really bothers me when people dismiss the internet because they have limited experience with it and/ or they don&#8217;t understand it. The paper I&#8217;m writing actually touches on the topic of how the internet has enriched my life, and until now I thought that my observations and experiences were fairly common but as it turns out, it might not be such a common thing. I don&#8217;t use the internet for porn or downloading things illegally, is that such a shocking notion? It could well be&#8230;</p>
<p><a href="http://newswithnipples.wordpress.com/2010/07/27/i-dont-have-kids-and-i-vote/">I don’t have kids, and I vote</a><br />
News with Nipples points out that people without children, without an easily digestible mantle like &#8220;working families&#8221;, are being ignored in this election. It doesn&#8217;t mean we don&#8217;t exist&#8230; in fact, there are a lot of us! If you&#8217;re not a 20-40 something with kids, the pollies don&#8217;t really care to talk to you. You&#8217;ll probably ask difficult questions, like &#8220;Why do you keep calling legitimate asylum seekers &#8216;illegal boat people&#8217;, you daft donkeys?&#8221; or &#8220;What are you going to do about housing prices, or baby boomers who keep buying all the low price housing to use as investment properties, because we can&#8217;t find affordable entry level properties and our parents keep giving us shit about renting?!&#8221;</p>
<p><a href="http://kissestokashmir.tumblr.com/post/859441190/something-i-have-been-thinking-about-a-lot">Something I have been thinking about a lot</a><br />
Marisa reflects on how the relentless pursuit of perfection in beauty has actually hurt her. It&#8217;s a really beautiful piece of writing, I encourage you to go read it in full, but here&#8217;s a snippet:<br />
<blockquote>I guess what I’m trying to say is that there’s no point in robbing people of what makes them different or unique and they may very well end up resenting you for the imposition into their lives. What you may consider a defect or an oddity, they may consider a vital characteristic of their personality. And you do not have the right to take it from them or to characterize what it means for them.</p></blockquote>
<p><a href="http://louiseevansdesign.blogspot.com"><img src="http://www.definatalie.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/RBSsmall-500x341.jpg" alt="Hand drawn logo for the Royal Bank of Sustainability. Features &quot;RBS&quot; and a lot of hand drawn illustration surrounding the letters on cut out brown card. " title="Louise Evans" width="500" height="341" class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2780" /></a><br />
Louise Evans does design/ illustration the way I do it! It&#8217;s always confusing trying to explain my style, I end up saying I&#8217;m a graphic artist or illustrative designer. You must go see <a href="http://louiseevansdesign.blogspot.com">the rest of Louise&#8217;s work</a> &#8211; lots of papercutting and hand drawn type!</p>
<p><a href="http://melindatankardreist.com/2010/07/how-can-sarah-murdoch-lend-her-good-name-to-this-toxic-show/">How can Sarah Murdoch lend her good name to this toxic show?</a><br />
Melinda Tankard Reist asks how Sarah Murdoch, who sits on the &#8220;National Body Image Advisory Committee&#8221; can be part of the terribly lady-hatin&#8217; Australia&#8217;s Next Top Model. Most of the interesting stuff is in the comments, where Charlotte Dawson learns that flaming people on the internet makes you look like a not-very-nice person. Actually I don&#8217;t think she&#8217;s learnt that lesson yet&#8230; I think Melinda mentioned on Twitter last night that Dawson was STILL commenting! Oh dear. </p>
<p><a href="http://www.crikey.com.au/2010/07/28/the-sisterhood-jesus-how-about-common-decency/">The sisterhood? Jesus. How about common decency?</a><br />
I knew this election would be different. Because a woman is running for the top job. Because it&#8217;s perfectly ok to dissect her hair, her clothes, her love life, <strong>her fracking EARLOBES</strong> instead of talking about her policies. Note to you: it&#8217;s not perfectly ok. PLEASE STOP. And please stop bitching about other women while you&#8217;re at it. Bernard Keane smacks the Australian media on the wrist. </p>

1. inspiring reverence or admiration; of supreme dignity or grandeur; majestic: an august performance of a religious drama.<br />

Tassels. I&#8217;m totally thinking about tassels lately. Flett Bertram&#8217;s tassel dresses (<a href="http://www.stylebubble.co.uk/style_bubble/2010/06/the-round-up-with-no-sight.html">seen on Style Bubble</a>) remind me of my Nana&#8217;s house and how she&#8217;d have these tassels hanging from the old keys stuck in the doors of her display cabinets. I actually have one of those display cabinets now, and a long tassel dangles from the old key! </p>
<p><a href="http://yffconference.tumblr.com/"><img src="http://www.definatalie.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/tumblr_l5g9yfXWYb1qbrnxvo1_500.jpg" alt="Eleven plus sized bloggers, mostly wearing black fashionable clothes, posting for a group photo." title="YFF Bloggers" width="500" height="400" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-2513" /></a><br />
The <a href="http://yffconference.tumblr.com/">YFF Conference</a> took place in New York City over the past weekend and I was sad that I couldn&#8217;t make it there, because the ladies looked like they were having so much fun! My ego was suitably assuaged when I saw the girls on live chat and they said they missed me :D </p>
<p><a href="http://www.keliebowman.com"><img src="http://www.definatalie.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/6a00d83454ed4169e20134853cbeb6970c-800wi.jpg" alt="An illustration on aged paper of the torso of a man with neat parted hair, his silhouette is filled with flowers coloured lilac, pink and yellow." title="Kelie Bowman" width="432" height="577" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-2514" /></a><br />
I really like the work of <a href="http://www.keliebowman.com/">Kelie Bowman</a>, and was kind of weirded out to see how similar some of <a href="http://www.keliebowman.com/artwork/new">her new work</a> is to some of my old work (particularly <a href="http://www.natalieperkins.com/79/art/personal-work/riddled-with-paisley/">Riddled with Paisley</a>). </p>
<p><a href="http://helenfurber.com/"><img src="http://www.definatalie.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/4770459350_a23a273f0e_b-500x561.jpg" alt="Four conceptual shoes on their sides are positioned in a kind of totem pole. The top is the last, second is a white boot upper with no heel, third is the sole and heel in a stalactite style, and the fourth is a similar stalactite style sole and heel." title="Helen Furber" width="500" height="561" class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2515" /></a><br />
I&#8217;m sure <a href="http://helenfurber.com/">Helen Furber</a>&#8216;s sustainable shoe designs have done the rounds in the last fortnight but I couldn&#8217;t not post this! I love the stalactite style heel, especially when it&#8217;s encased in clear material. </p>
<p><a href="http://www.fubiz.net/2010/07/07/inspiration-pad/"><img src="http://www.definatalie.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/inspiration-pad3-550x381-500x346.jpg" alt="An open notepad with red ruled margin on the left but the &quot;typical&quot; ruled blue lines are undulating across the spread instead of laying flat!" title="Inspiration pad" width="500" height="346" class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2516" /></a><br />
My friend Pete shared this gem of an &#8220;Inspiration Pad&#8221; on his <a href="http://www.google.com/reader/shared/15455903461505796014">Google Reader shared items</a>. I can&#8217;t read French but I think the pad was designed by Marc Thomasset &#8211; you should go see <a href="http://www.fubiz.net/2010/07/07/inspiration-pad/">the other spreads in the pad</a> too!</p>

<p>I&#8217;ve been doing a bit of drawing and experimenting for myself in the last week, and one of the things I&#8217;ve liked doing is drawing in white gouache over a black inked background. Doodling with a paintbrush is becoming a frequent thing for me because it helps relieve a lot of hand and wrist pain I suffer from gripping pens too tightly. </p>
<p>Flickr have changed their layout recently, so I hope that you can still grab the resolution you need like usual. If you&#8217;ve got any issues with downloading do let me know.</p>

<p>I spend around 12-24 hours on each desktop, inking and drawing each element before scanning everything and pulling it all together in Photoshop for each desktop resolution. If you&#8217;d like to throw in a couple of bucks to contribute to the time spent drawing each desktop as well as my general hosting costs for definatalie.com and my flickr account, your donation will be much appreciated. <3 </p>
