It’s nice to work together

Auf Liebe Eingestellt

Kirsten Becken approached me a few weeks ago and asked if I’d like to doodle all over her photographs. Upon seeing her impressive portfolio, and the bunches of delicious white space available for me to draw on, I took her up on her offer with much enthusiasm!

Did I fall asleep?

The artists I know often work autonomously, and I can speak from my own experience when I say that it can get lonely. It’s nice working with other people on collaborative projects; I think artists should work together more often!

This Saturday is Drawing Day, and I was hoping to host a collaborative drawing project but I think I’m going to be out all day, which I’m really bummed by. So some of you guys should do it! Pass around a piece of paper amongst friends or family, and have everyone doodle on it. If you want to work digitally, pass around a Jpeg for artists around the world to work on! (And if you want to include me, just let me know ahead of Saturday so I know what I’ve gotten myself into!)

I really believe everyone can draw, and I think Drawing Day is a great thing to participate in, because it has the potential to help you unlock another avenue for expressing yourself and your creativity. If you say “wah wah I can’t draw” I will break your feet all Misery style and force you to draw until you can walk again! (muahaha!)

Drawing Day 08 on Red Bubble

Drawing Day was FUN on Red Bubble! thickblackoutline and Natalie Tyler graciously hosted the Drawing Day group, and even had a mini-challenge to draw a new avatar in the forums.

My Drawing Day efforts

RSI or bust

Well, Drawing Day is coming to a close for me (but if you don’t live in the future like me, you still have heaps of time!) so I thought I should post the drawings I did today. It was a challenge, I’ll admit, because when I sat down to draw this afternoon my shoulder started playing up something shocking and so my drawings kind of took on the bitterness I feel towards the RSI I suffer from.

I also drew a self portrait for a Drawing Day challenge over on Red Bubble, and tied for first place with Paul!

Tomorrow evening I will post a few entries covering my favourite Drawing Day drawings picked from Red Bubble and Flickr. Did you participate? Are you blogging DD08? Let me know!

I have been quiet lately I know, but I’ve been feeling a bit off. I decided to take a bit of time away from work to draw some girls!

In the next couple of months I’ll be working on a blog redesign with my husband. Yay! I’m really not a coding person, so I’ve struggled to work with various aspects of the template I currently use. Luckily, Nick is way into coding and is looking for new projects so I have given him my mock up and told him to go nuts!

Never were truer words spoken…

By Chris Piascik [via Meet Me at Mikes].

I am in the middle of trying to get back in to drawing. My arm has been incredibly painful in recent months so I’ve tried to lay off the intensive drawing sessions. I need to organise a proper drawing space with a tilted surface but I just haven’t gotten around to it yet.

What is this?

This is part of the new series… “fancy hair” is my work in progress title. I need to buy some more 0.1 black pens because mine ran out!

I got myself a tumblr account so I can post strictly images I like and bits of my work. Follow me if you want to!

Don’t forget, Drawing Day 08 is coming up on June 7. I’m hoping to get a whole heap of RedBubblers involved and I’ll post my favourite DD08 drawings here. If you’re joining in on DD08, or if you just want to participate by blogging it, let me know because I’ll add links to other DD08 posts in my entries!

Draw your arm off on June 7

invoicing doodle

In case you hadn’t noticed, I love drawing. I take a pen and paper everywhere just so I can doodle – I doodled through school and university, meetings (like the above), tv shows, and lectures from my parents! I was excited to find out from Jo on RedBubble that there is an international drawing day named “Drawing Day” that is starting this year on June 7! I hold the firm belief that everyone can draw. It’s a learnt technical skill, not a mythical god given gift, and through a bit of study anyone can pick up a pencil and render a scene or a concept.

Drawing is a way of clearing my own mind, and it helps me to think through ideas as well as to be receptive to new ideas. My teachers used to scold me for “not listening” when they were teaching a lesson and I was furiously scribbling with my biros, when in reality I was listening very carefully and receiving absolutely everything they were saying. Once I explained it to them and recounted word for word the lesson that they were teaching, they were quite happy to let me doodle through their lessons. I’ve had the same problem when I’ve sat in meetings… but, hellooooo – I’m a designer!

There are so many ways to participate in Drawing Day 08, but the way I’m going to participate is by uploading my drawings to the Drawing Day flickr pool, and posting them here on my blog. If you’re going to participate, comment here so I can post everyone’s drawings in a special Drawing Day post! If you’ve never said hello before, this is the perfect way to break the ice :D
