The Swell Sculpture Festival at Currumbin Beach has been showing for the last fortnight but we only got out to catch it yesterday morning, before it closes today. We took Miffy with us because there aren’t many art events you can take your dog to! We are bestowing on her an education in the creative arts, primarily teaching her not to pee or poo near or on the art. We walked up and down the beach, stopping to look at sculptures and greet other art-loving dogs, and at the end of the walk we all sat down in the shade of a tree sipping our cool refreshments.

I wish I’d taken one of the booklets so I could have more information to accompany my photographs but please enjoy these snaps and my probably incorrect and uncultured descriptions. It was a super sunny, hot day and looks gorgeous in the photos but trust me, the sand was hot and the sweat was dripping!

When Mel Baxter asked if I’d like to be part of the launch exhibition for Curvy 2010 at Nine Lives I was really, really, really honoured. It’s been a rough few months and the opportunity to hang my work besides the lovely likes of Courtney Brims, Lilly Piri, Beci Orpin and Bec Winnel was so spirit lifting! (Yes, yes, this is my daggy “You really like me!!!” moment!)

Tonight was the launch party and I was accompanied by Nick and Zoe. I won’t lie, I dread opening nights for art shows and stuff because I get really anxious. I’ve just started medication again this week to address said anxiousness and the first couple of weeks is usually really not fabulous so I was glad to have the company of my people. Especially because today was very not fabulous in the old brain area. Unfortunately tonight’s outing was soured when we were egged, and I copped most of it in my hair and on my polka dot dress. People can be real jerks. If I’d wanted to do a protein treatment I would have done it myself douchebags!

Last night I went to the premiere of Jucy at the Brisbane International Film Festival, a film made in Brisbane by Brisbane people! It was very special for me because some of my illustrations are in the opening sequence and I also illustrated the cover on a mix cd prop. My name is even in the credits, wooowwwieeeee! (I seriously can’t get over that, it was a huge thrill.)

Jucy is a movie with two women in the lead roles and it doesn’t just pass the Bechdel Test, it gets gold stars and a ticker-tape parade because it deals with mental health, body image and friendship in a realistic way. None of the gorgeous stars are size 0, in fact Francesca Gasteen (who plays Lucy) is pretty much MY SIZE. Horay! That never happens in movies or tv! It’s a movie that is close to me not just because I did some work on it; there’s a certain Brisbaneness that is infused throughout this film and I identify so strongly with being fat, wanting a creative career and dealing with mental illness too.

Here is my “wandering through the magical garden of faeries” pose.

I was a unicorn. An inappropriate unicorn, drinking wine out of plastic cups and quoting Jay Z lyrics at inopportune times! This was the first time I’ve ever really dressed up for Halloween because it’s not really a thing in Australia, but my friend Heather organised a huge party so I thought I should put in some effort.

[Warning: There is an animated gif down below!]

The lovely Zoe and Sonya also attended as Delirium and Medusa and of course we couldn’t let an opportunity to Awkward Lean pass us by.

Nick was on photo duties and figured out how to photograph bokeh… oh no, A MONSTER HAS BEEN MADE!

The ice cream cone was the headpiece I made for Nick, who went as Ralph Wiggins. Unfortunately I used the wrong glue and the ice cream detached from the headband. Sad story :(

It wouldn’t be a proper party if no one ever photobombed. I looove the second photo just because the werewolf and Grudge costumes were so freaky!

Thank you Heather (as Roxie Richter from Scott Pilgrim) for a great party! I think we look like kick ass superheroes here :D

My sister got married yesterday (which is why the desktop isn’t up yet, sorry!) so I want to share some photos with you. Where my wedding was more unconventional in its styling, Michelle and Jordan’s wedding was more traditional with the big white dress and veil as well as dark suits for the groom and his men. Lemme just wack the photos up so I don’t bore you :P

Of course you want to know what I wore, am I right? Here are the details:
Dress: Collection from Myer (Thank you to Kiki for sending it to me!)
Bolero: City Chic
Shoes: Evans
Necklace and clutch: borrowed from Mum
Bracelets: City Chic
Rings: City Chic and Evans
Nails: MOI!

If foot agony is the measure of a good night let’s just say Michelle and Jordan’s reception scored off the charts and required an ice bath followed by a warm water bath (and many tears.) There are so many more photos I wanted to share but I didn’t want to bombard you with my (potentially boring) family stuff, but I really wanted to blog about this happy occasion!

I’ll endeavour to get the desktop up tomorrow, but ALSO! I got my Beth Ditto stuff from Evans finally… I haven’t had a second to try the polka dot dress, silver mary-janes or the grey skirt on yet, but I LOVE the drapey black t-shirt. I can’t even describe it.

The Finders Keepers are coming back for the Brisbane Spring/ Summer markets and I was asked to design the poster!

The Brisbane markets will take place on November 6 and 7 at The Old Museum. Applications for stalls are still open at the moment, so if you want to go sell your wares make sure you check out the application page.

The other bit of awesome news I have to share is that my piece La Donna Mascherata was accepted into the 2010 Curvy book. It’s a big deal to me because I was amongst 75 artists from 38 countries picked out of 2300 submissions by Fafi and Sarah Lerfel (from Colette; and the wonderful Deanne Cheuk is doing the layout too!

A few weeks ago my work was in an exhibition as part of the launch of Vintage Garage, a Melbourne store selling rare and unique and nostalgic things. It’s a bit strange having work appear in interstate shows but it’s also very exciting! I’m also really happy that the shows I’ve been doing lately aren’t typical gallery shows, it’s proof that I don’t have to be part of the very flawed gallery system in Australian art. One day I’d love to organise my own solo show, but I just worry that my organisational skills aren’t especially fabulous considering the amount of work I know goes into coordinating an exhibition! I’m always really appreciative of people like Sheridan Mills, who arranged the Vintage Garage show, and Renee-Anne who coordinates Leeloo‘s shows (like the recent Disband) – they’ve got some organisational chops for sure.

Anyway, Sheridan just sent me some photos of the opening night at Vintage Garage so I’ll pop a few in here! The other artists in the show were: Kat Weir, Ali J, Eirryn Porter, Linda Fährlin and Andrea Innocent.

We were on unfamiliar turf last night as we tripped into The Loft, and in a way it was kind of nice to be in a city that none of us had any allegiance to! The Loft is a dark, intimate space with bouncy carpet and beautifully textural walls, looking out on to Darling Harbour and all its winking lights.

After securing a vantage point amongst the enthusiastic crowd I was pleased to discover that the lighting was going to work to my advantage, seeing as I typically avoid flash photography. I’m pretty pleased with the photos I took, you can see a lot more details but certainly a lot of the ambient light roaming around the frame is missing – and I know a couple of you really like that effect!

Lulu in Chains are going through to the finals thanks to the judges too.

The crowd chose Lulu in Chains as their favourite.

I was really impressed with Sydney’s entrants. Every collection had something I liked, and there was a distinct sense of excitement and enthusiasm vibrating through the room. My stand out favourites were Lulu in Chains and Danielle Van Camp, and I was pleased to see the public and the judges (respectively) reward them with a place in the finals. The other judge selection was LUELA – check out the photo in the gallery, the detailing on the neckline is very pretty.

It’s been an absolute blast attending these heats and covering them on my blog, and it was made even more fantastic because I got to share the experience with Lady Melbourne and Fashion Hayley, two fancy ladies whose passion for fashion is infectious. It’s not over just yet though! The finals will be held at The Strand, Sydney on August 29 and while 9 finalists are locked in there is one spot remaining and you get to vote your favourite designer in.

VOTE YOUR FAVOURITE IN TO THE FINALS

So!
I’ve been invited to attend the Chambord Shine Awards in three states, to cover the heats and finals on my blog and also to involve you fancy lovely people to vote on your favourite fashion designs. It’s a huge honour to have been invited as a blogger and considering the calibre of fashion bloggers invited to cover the event – the fabulous Fashion Hayley and Lady Melbourne – I was feeling more than a little nervous as I stepped into Cloudland for the first heat of the awards last night in my native town of Brisbane. I needn’t have fretted, Lady M and Hayley are adorable and effervescent and Chambord treated us to our own little Cindarellaesque bloggers’ booth stage right of the main action!

I got the opportunity to get to know my Nuffnang co-bloggers over Chambord French martinis, sushi and other nibbles. As the night progressed our blogger’s pumpkin saw a steady procession of local fashion designers and fellow fashion fans. Despite being a Brisbane local, I’d never been to Cloudland before – it’s quite easy to get lost in the many details of the lush, textural interior fit out.

I do hope you enjoy my impressionist photography of the fashion show! My little camera tries very hard to keep up with all the glamour but sometimes all you get is a smear of bright lights and voluminous textiles.

Lady M and Hayley noted that Brisbane was dressing awfully like Melbourne – indeed a lot of our people were draped in black last night. We need to talk Brisbane. Did the unusually cold weather freak you out?! I decided on a pop of colour at the last minute, you guys know how I feel about blending in! After seeing the hooded, layered black and gold number from Subfusco (check the above video) the universe is pointing me in a layering/ shapeless direction and I’m thinking about a bit of DIY effort for my trips to the Melbourne and Sydney heats (if I have time… though if you’re a local designer who’d like to dress me, say hi!) I’d like to unleash the Beth Ditto domino dress but it’ll be cold down south, so the notion of a long trailing cape is exciting me. For further inspiration you should check out Lady Melbourne and her amazing long black sequined number!

I think it’s time to look at some proper photography of the finalists – these shots are all courtesy of Karen Watson.

Three designers will be chosen from each runway showcase in Melbourne and Sydney, but there is one more slot in the finals and that will be chosen by YOU on the Chambord facebook page. Voting takes place from July 8-11th and after the Sydney heat I’ll remind you to go vote your butt off for your favourite so a winner can be selected and sent to the finals at The Strand, Sydney.

ETA: Vote now for your favourite designer to go through as a wildcard entry in the finals!

I don’t see much theatre which is a shame because there’s a lot of interesting stuff going on on Brisbane, but I did manage to catch the Queensland Theatre Company’s production of Neil LaBute’s Fat Pig last night. I’m not going to lie, my interest was piqued by the title and when my friend Kathleen recommended I see it, a bunch of my fat friends and I arranged to go together.

I spent most of the time sitting in the Bille Brown studio’s generously wide seats angry, even though the production had played on the comedic aspects of the script. LaBute, a man, has written a story about how terribly hard it is for hetero men to select partners and play mates alike when there are only thin, shrieking women and fat pigs on offer. It really is all about the mens and their problems. The production really played up to this, and unfortunately for me it all came down to the performance of Paige Gardiner’s Jeanie (as main character Tom’s ex and co-worker). Jeanie exaggeratedly stomped, pouted, flopped and screamed around Tom (played by Christopher Sommers), while Amy Ingram’s Helen (as the “fat pig”) provided a warm and humorous alternative. I didn’t understand how Tom would feel bad about letting his heart lead him because in my experience even the most insecure men I’ve dated have chosen to stick with the fat chick they really like over societal pressure to date a more acceptable thinner woman.

Perhaps the issue is of place and context. The play was written by an American, and set in the United States. In this Australian production, no Americanisms were changed. Units of measurement, imperial; visiting imaginary colleagues, from Chicago; and the final heartbreaking scene, July 4th. Perhaps I can’t understand the experience of a busy and important white business man working in a big American city. The thing is, I don’t have to. I am a Fat Pig. If a play is going to use an insult frequently hurled at me, I’m going to be very critical of who it represents.

I can’t say that this is was altogether an unneeded production of the play, because I think it did have enough scope to get people thinking about size and love and standing up for what makes you happy. I just wish more was localised beside the accents. I wish Jeanie hadn’t served as such a literal counterweight to Helen – a way for the men in the audience to get a chuckle away at their own recollections of the insecure spurned women in their lives. I feel as if Helen was written about a woman who was significantly larger than Amy Ingram, otherwise the characters in this play were awfully sensitive to size.

The really successful and heartwrenching elements of the production: the minimal and flexible set design; cute use of colour vs greyscale in costuming; Steven Rooke’s misogynist and very punchable Carter; and that final scene. The actors took their bows with tears streaming down their faces. Many in the audience left patting theirs dry, while I was prying my fingernails from my palms.

And now you’ve suffered through my amateur review, here’s what I wore! It was a mild Brisbane winter night, jacket not really required!
