The Brisbane Chapel

I am in Melbourne this week, but I wanted to show you some photos I took of Brisbane last week. Despite all its problems and complete lack of love for anything cultural that isn’t state funded, Brisbane is my home town and I can’t help but feel sentimental about it.

The eye

Lots of people seem to like this photo, because I mean who doesn’t like a grown-up ferris wheel? I’m a bit grumpy that it has to be branded with the Channel 7 logo though. And it’s expensive (I’ve not been for a ride yet because it doesn’t seem worth it!)

Too tall to duck under the bridge

I don’t want to be one of those Brisbane-born creatives that are afflicted with the Brisbane Cringe, but I think I may have to betray my city in the next few years. I am sad that I don’t know how to make it better, maybe when I’m older I’ll have enough experience and wisdom to feel up to taking on the task.

Another Saturday in Brisneyland

The last few times we’ve been to the markets I forgot to pick up flowers, but today Nick helped me pick out the blooms! I actually saw the green chrysanthemums and grabbed them but didn’t know what to pair them with. Nick thought they’d go well with some white oriental lilies, and what do you know? They look very pretty! We are indeed a budding floral design couple.

I’m still in love with the Hipstamatic app. This is taken with the Kaimal Mark II lens and Ina’s 1969 film.

Taken with the John S lens and Blanko film. Life is simpler through the Hipstamatic’s viewfinder!

It’s so bright and sunny and hot today! We’ll probably be going for another swim at the local pool later.

The whimsy box of now!

This morning I stumbled across a new iPhone app called Hipstamatic which promised to turn regular iPhone photos into old-timey looking happy snaps from a whimsy-box of yore. I wasn’t disappointed. In fact, I’m starting to think that my new Holga camera has nothing on the Hipstamatic – I still have to go pick up the developed photos from the first roll I shot!

The flowers are at our local swimming pool. I love them! I don’t love this itchy chlorine feeling that I can’t shower away though… :(

June wants to know what you’ve achieved this year…

June desktop demo

June is serious business. In Australia, June is the time for stock take and if you are an employee who has to do end-of-financial-year activities (like my husband!) it really sucks. Even though I have a creative job, I am feeling the pressure… I’m in the middle of setting a business up, and also fielding enquiries and doing lots of work within my creative practice – which I run like a business as well. Sometimes I just want to run away and forget about everything for a few hours, and I guess I get these sort of visions in my head. Sort of like Mary Poppins on a carousel in the Red Queen’s garden.

May 2009 desktop – it’s getting chilly!

definatalie.com May 2009 desktop demo

I’m not sure where you’re from in the world, but May is generally one of those in-between months and you can never really predict what the weather is going to be like. Fortunately right now in Brisbane there’s a cool nip in the air that takes the edge off the strong sunlight. I have a bunch of felt that I bought for random purposes, and this month I thought it would be nice if I played with it a little bit in Photoshop! The lettering for May was inspired by the marigolds in the gardens of the homes of my childhood. They are such bright and welcoming flowers and make me feel warm looking at them.

I’m proud to offer the following desktops, including wallpapers for a couple of phone resolutions too since that went down well last month! Follow the links to flickr and download the resolution that’s perfect for you.

April is a nice time of year in Brisbane…

April desktop - demo

It’s April, starting from tomorrow! It really crept up on me, I just realised today was the last of March and I’d better whip up a desktop. An organised person would make the whole year of calendars in advance, but I’m not organised (ok I am some times) and I kind of like being able to signpost each month with what I’ve been drawing. So far this year, you can really see what techniques I’ve been working through! This month is super busy for me, just like March has been. Also, it’s coming up to my first wedding anniversary, so that’s a bit spesh!
