Tell me about your body

Tell me about your body

After going to TEDxBrisbane and seeing Dallas Clayton’s video on publishing “An Awesome Book” I have been feeling inspired to self publish a book. I’ve also been reading a few old zines, the FaT GiRL zines from the 90s in particular, and I thought I’d start out by publishing a zine on body image – your body image.

My body is an anarchy coat. It looks after me.
So, I put up a question on a Google Form: Tell me about your body in 10 words or less.

Some days my body makes me want to cry
Lots of people have contributed their statements already! Some of them are sad, some are funny, but all of them speak to me of honesty and struggle.

My body is my best friend and my worst enemy

So, how do you feel about your body? You can contribute too. You don’t have to put your real name, but a name is nice because I can illustrate your words and then attribute those words to you. The end product will be an A5 sized zine – I am yet to figure out the details, but I hope to have enough interest in the book to have it colour printed. I will also make the zine available online for free.

If you’re interested in a printed zine, please let me know so I can start figuring out numbers!

Self esteem is revolutionary

The not good enough's

In a culture where negative self talk is actively encouraged most of us have days when we feel like we don’t measure up. This practice of comparing ourselves and our bodies with others rarely produces good outcomes. It’s such a damaging culture that even those with high self esteem aren’t immune. Even those who are activists, advocating for fat acceptance, aren’t safe.

When I find myself in these moments where I compare myself to others and despair at the ways I am lacking, I try to remember this. Some people are surprised that I can fight for size diversity, human rights and self-love so fiercely yet still be afflicted with bouts of crippling low confidence – but I’ve got to tell you right now, this is proof of our self-hating culture.

Margaret Cho, someone more eloquent (and hilarious) than I, says it really well.

And I have a lot of self-esteem, which is amazing, because I’m probably somebody who wouldn’t necessarily have a lot of self esteem, as I am considered a minority. And if you are a woman; if you are a person of color; if you are gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender; if you are a person of size; if you are person of intelligence; if you are a person of integrity, then YOU are considered a minority in this world. And it’s going to be really hard to find messages of self-love and support anywhere, especially women’s and gay men’s culture. It’s all about how you have to look a certain way, or else you’re worthless. You know, when you look in the mirror and think, “Ugh, I’m so ugly, I’m so fat, I’m so old.” Don’t you know that’s not your authentic self? That is billions upon billions of dollars of advertising: magazines, movies, billboards, all geared to make you feel shitty about yourself, so that you will take your hard-earned money, and spend it at the mall on some turn-around creme that doesn’t turn around shit. If you don’t have self-esteem, you will hesitate before you do anything in your life. You will hesitate to go for the job you want to go for. You will hesitate to ask for a raise. You will hesitate to call yourself an American. You will hesitate to report a rape. You will hesitate to defend yourself when you are discriminated against because of your race, your sexuality, your size, your gender. You will hesitate to vote. You will hesitate to dream. For us to have self-esteem is truly an act of revolution, and our revolution is long overdue. I urge you all today, especially today in these times of terrorism and chaos, to love yourselves without reservation and to love each other without restraint. Unless you’re into leather, then by all means, use restraints. Thank you.

March on.

March desktop demo

Hello, many apologies for the late desktop but it is here now! This month’s desktop is the result of many hours of mindless doodling, and inspired by a billion things going on in my life. When I’ve got heavy things on the mind I have my own version of meditating – obsessively tiny doodling. I’ve been so flat out I hadn’t really planned anything for this month’s desktop so I though using my doodlings would fairly accurately reflect where I’m at right now ;)

A day for doodling

I haven’t really had time to work on any personal art in the last few months and I worry sometimes that if I don’t take time out for myself that I’ll forget about all the things I want to say and draw. Yesterday I took a day off to recover from some busy weeks (and yep, the holiday!) and thought I’d take my pen to the latest issue of frankie which has ample space for doodling facetious little things.

I read popular culture a lot more deeply these days, and while I avoid most of it, some things are still palatable – frankie being one of those things. It’s not without its problems, in particular I find it to be quite homogenous in the sort of people it represents (white and young and left-leaning and fairly financially comfortable). When I do my little snarky doodles I’m not mocking the models themselves, rather I’m asking questions of the branding and positioning of the magazine itself (and any other magazine I doodle on!) So I submit these doodles without comment for you to think about and perhaps discuss in the comments between yourselves :D

A Lifetime of Conditioning

It's cool

Loving Melbourne trams

Yes, Nick and I are back and you can expect a solid week of swooning over Melbourne stuff. But first… the trams. I never thought I’d be so enamored of a public transportation system but after a week of catching several trams daily my love is for sure. We even went to the Hawthorn Tram Depot on our first day in town – mostly because Nick is an avid rail fan, but after seeing the beauty in the old lettering and typography on these finely crafted machines I was won over.

Check out all the photos I took at the museum on flickr.

In the collage I did up the top you’ll see a card featuring one of the destination blinds from the old trams, designed and printed by Poulier + Poulier Design; a handmade tram pillow by Mrs Beckinsale featured in this month’s frankie magazine; and a diecast toy tram by Traffic Toys.

One rather exciting thing that happened recently was that I was one of six featured lettering artists in How magazine’s 25th anniversary issue.

See, there I am! The write up was really lovely too and made me feel all busy and important. If you’d like to read the page I was profiled on, take a gander over here. Thanks How!

Be awesome to each other

Enjoy the day and do something fun :D

28 days of picnics

February 2010 Desktop demo

I think I was in a picnic mood while designing February’s desktop. Maybe I’ll make all my friends drive up to Mt Nebo where we can eat cupcakes, look out to the bay and pretend we live in the mountains and not in the city.

Go download a desktop before February disappears into March!

The Fanciest New Year

Countdown!

I am really excited about 2010, and it’s not because I want to see the back of 2009. It’s because this year has been really wonderful: I have made strides in my art career, met so many new friends, reached a place of peace within myself and just generally had a lot of fun.

When I was a teenager I’d make resolutions, and none of them ever stuck. So, when I reached my 20’s I decided to stop making any resolution other than “Natalie, you must have the most excellent year”. Every year has been better than the last, and I feel that it has a lot to do with treating myself kindly and not punishing myself for failing to keep resolutions that are ridiculous.

In the next year I actually want to resolve to do a few things that I feel are realistic:
• I will attend art exhibitions and events and get to know people in the Brisbane scene better.
• I will keep trying new things in my creative practice.
• I will keep up with the Couch to 5k programme, but don’t chastise myself if I need longer to achieve the milestones, or if I miss a session.
• I will listen to my body and my brain, and treat myself accordingly – always with respect and honour.
• I will have lots of fun! :D

If you are setting goals for next year I hope they are honest and achievable and if you trip up a little, I hope you don’t treat yourself too unkind. I also hope that you’re heralding the new decade in a most excellent and safe manner!

Housekeeping! I haven’t done a desktop for January 2010 yet, but don’t fret – there will be one! The holiday season has been very… relaxing, and I’ve been taking some time out. I’ll update with a new desktop for the new year in a few days!

Help me pick three to submit to Curvy!

Curvy publishes a book of over 100 female artists, graphic designers and illustrators every year, and each year I am completely intimidated by it. Earlier this year I submitted work for the first time and was pretty dejected when it wasn’t accepted… I guess I am pretty bad at dealing with rejection :P

Not good enough
So I drew this, haha.

Once again, I will throw myself to the lions, errr selection panel, but I’m having a tiny crisis about what I should submit for consideration for next year’s book. I know that lots of people really like my typographic pieces but there are some other more illustrative pieces that I am fond of too. So, if you could choose three, which would you choose?
