I’ve been busy busy lately working on new products for Fancy Lady Industries, including the new and fabulous Vain necklace! After feeling some feelings and thinking some thoughts on ugliness and vanity, I started doodling and developed the Vain lettering. It simply begged to be made into a necklace, and voila!

When Alex Louisa let me know that my Lovely postcard was used in this month’s issue of Home Beautiful magazine I was pretty surprised. I’m glad the stylist liked it enough to include it (though it’d be cool if it was attributed, just saying!)

This is what I do on Friday nights. I’m not a rager and you won’t find me at a party; no sir, I’m right here drawing and mucking around. After noticing that my clients seem to want me to do a lot of script lettering, my friend Viv challenged me to draw something like this. Instead of rendering it by hand I decided to take it into Illustrator, because I haven’t done much lettering work in the program for ages.

Yes, it says “Script is borls”. Interpret as you wish :P

I found this beetle crawling around the hibiscus the other day. It’s nearly time for Christmas beetles, but this isn’t one of those… I wonder what it is?

Did I show you the poster I drew for the Leeloo Disband show? Well if so, here it is again, because Renee and Angela are taking the exhibition to Melbourne! My work will also be in this show, so if you’re local to Melbourne make a date to check it out.

I posted a snap of this as a work in progress before going in and doodling up a frenzy with my Pilot Hi-Tec-C. It’s available on Red Bubble to buy as a print.

For something a bit different: I designed a blog layout for Nick and his billionth new blog (teehee). I wanted to give him a blog he felt comfortable with and inspired by, so he’d keep nourishing it and growing it. It’s very cute and fresh, just like him!

The lovely Rebecca commissioned this piece from me! It’s sitting beside me, patiently waiting to be mailed. Eep!

Primping and preening

I did a bit of sprucing up on my blog this evening. I’d been meaning to for a while but time had gotten away from me! As always, I got way too into it and started playing in Illustrator with lettering I’d copied from sketches.

My soundtrack all day has been Sia’s new album, We Are Born and I love it. It’s been on repeat!

Friday Fance: Fance harder?

A prickly pear chair! I had to look a few times before I understood what I was looking at. I love this chair style, and I adore that the back has been used to replicate a cactus! It’s by Valentina Gonzalez Wohlers, and her site is currently down but I’ll link to the Design*Sponge post I found it in instead!

This is part of an abandoned railway station in Abkhazia, a former Russian territory. Basically this is like my dream landscaping and/or interior decor. I love vines and overgrown plants reclaiming buildings. Check out the rest of the photos on englishrussia.com.

I adore calligraphy, and have wanted to get into it for ages but simply haven’t had the time to investigate buying the tools! This work is by Patricia Muman of Primele, who offer custom calligraphy as well as stamps. The product photos are just gorgeous, I love when sellers put such thought into styling their photographs.

Advanced Style posted some photographs from a Dazed and Confused editorial that featured two incredibly fancy women. I really REALLY want to be this amazing when I grow up.

Continuing my obsession with vertical gardens, here is a product that was MADE for me! Woolly Pockets are hanging vertical pockets that allow you to plant all kinds of amazing greenery on your walls. I got this photo from Design*Sponge’s post on Barbara Bestor‘s house, which uses the Woolly Pockets to great effect. I’m pretty sure these would be perfect for renters too!

May is such a lovely month here in Brisbane. The air gets a little crisper but the sun is still strong and it’s perfect weather to read a book in the sun. Because many of you are from the other side of the world, I am mindful not to make my designs too southern hemisphere oriented, but I selfishly want to considering northern hemisphere people are rarely mindful of us! I bought new turquoise ink and wanted to use it to create a desktop that encapsulated the nip in the wind and the warmth of the sun that I find so charming at this time of the year in Brisbane. I hope it translates for you, wherever you are in the world!

These desktops are especially dedicated to Mark and Tee, who donated flickr pro accounts to me when I couldn’t afford to pay to extend my pro time. Thank you so much guys, you really saved my ass and helped get these desktops up this month.

After going to TEDxBrisbane and seeing Dallas Clayton’s video on publishing “An Awesome Book” I have been feeling inspired to self publish a book. I’ve also been reading a few old zines, the FaT GiRL zines from the 90s in particular, and I thought I’d start out by publishing a zine on body image – your body image.

So, I put up a question on a Google Form: Tell me about your body in 10 words or less.

Lots of people have contributed their statements already! Some of them are sad, some are funny, but all of them speak to me of honesty and struggle.

So, how do you feel about your body? You can contribute too. You don’t have to put your real name, but a name is nice because I can illustrate your words and then attribute those words to you. The end product will be an A5 sized zine – I am yet to figure out the details, but I hope to have enough interest in the book to have it colour printed. I will also make the zine available online for free.

If you’re interested in a printed zine, please let me know so I can start figuring out numbers!
