The Swell Sculpture Festival at Currumbin Beach has been showing for the last fortnight but we only got out to catch it yesterday morning, before it closes today. We took Miffy with us because there aren’t many art events you can take your dog to! We are bestowing on her an education in the creative arts, primarily teaching her not to pee or poo near or on the art. We walked up and down the beach, stopping to look at sculptures and greet other art-loving dogs, and at the end of the walk we all sat down in the shade of a tree sipping our cool refreshments.

I wish I’d taken one of the booklets so I could have more information to accompany my photographs but please enjoy these snaps and my probably incorrect and uncultured descriptions. It was a super sunny, hot day and looks gorgeous in the photos but trust me, the sand was hot and the sweat was dripping!

In my late night internet traversings I came across Miss Platnum, a Romanian-German singer who combines hip hop, R&B and folk music. She is beyond stunning, right?

This is part of a installation work by Finnish artist Johnna Pohjalainen. When I first saw this picture I did a double take because the scale confused me so much. They look like actual pencils! Do click through and see the other photos of this work, the installed upright pencils look like they are colouring the sky, the clouds and the sunset.

These invitations are the work of Aaron Scamihorn who goes by the name of Ron Lewhorn. He says they were designed for a friend who was having a party based on the theme of these horse races. Because, like so many wonderful images, this was posted to tumblr uncredited I spent ages trying to source the designer! I’m glad I did, this work is wonderful.

Crabs freak me out, but this Purple Shore Crab taken by Pete McGregor is certainly a fancy one! I love the purple colour on its front claws and the adorable upturned eyes.

I know white washed walls and furniture are really hip right now, but I’m into it. It appeals to my desire for natural light and sparseness, because I actually live in a dim, dank cavern of an apartment with only pin-pricks of natural light coming through. This fancy-framed mirror juxtaposes nicely with the stacked packing pallets. Yes, I said juxtaposes. Please don’t unsubscribe. The Selby took this photo – you should go and look at the rest if you enjoy this aesthetic.

Love these beaded rosettes! I am pretty inspired to see if I can make myself something similar. Lots of something similar, and cover myself in them! This is from a photoshoot done for Numéro #112, and found via Amy Uhrich‘s blog.

I love Elsa Mora, and her work. I don’t know if I’ve adequately expressed how influential she is on me, but let me say… she produces the most lovely work, and radiates with the most lovely niceness of any person on earth. Not only did she create the papercut in this pendant, but she also sculpted the frame and had it cast in brass. I love the objects she makes, they echo the notion of giving and loving that I am concerned with in my own work.

I caught the work of stylist Anita Kaushal on decor8 and was furiously right click and saving this image within minutes! My Mum and Dad are moving into a new house soon and I know Mum loves these foil wallpapers, so I thought I’d dedicate this to her.

Another gorgeous image via decor8, I can’t help it! These objects are by Ferry Staverman, who possesses a sense of shape that I really envy. Go check out his site and revel in the playful lines.

While I understand the gloriousness of the cephalopod, I don’t tend to go crazy for octapus stuff but when I saw this Adam Wallacavage chandelier on Jo’s tumblr I thought it was pretty freaking awesome. I think it’s a combination of the excellent form of the tentacles, the functionality and fanciness of a chandelier as well as the gorgeous colour scheme that makes this so brilliant.

This is but a sampling of Julie Moon’s lovely sculptural pieces, you really ought to go check her portfolio out! There’s so much stuff I like, from the shapes to the fine and doodly details.

Isn’t this the most adorable outfit ever? cocorosa posted this to chictopia, and I think it’s the best.

I would love to have a little space like this but it certainly wouldn’t stay neat and cute because I am a whirlwind of destruction. I wish I knew where this came from, so if you know please tell me!

I hope to walk down an avenue lined with cherry blossoms in bloom one day in my life. This lovely photo is by Satomi Shirai, and it was taken in New York.

I have a lot of talented friends, and I only realised it when I sat down and thought about writing profiles on all of them to share with you here! I have friends who are photographers, artists, designers, models, performers, publishers, writers, musicians and activists. For most of these guys, I’m lucky to have fallen into their company as just a “friend” while others I met in a professional sense and then we developed a friendship. Because there are so many, I am going to break this up into a series of sorts, to allow you to digest the sheer amount of talent and creativity I have around me!

Tea Tasbihgou – jewellery designer for Sacré Coeur

I met Teayam online so long ago now! She does heaps of creative things – illustration, modelling and jewellery design. She recently started up Sacre Coeur, and creates steampunk styled accessories out of the most beautiful found objects. Of course, I chose the above image because there’s a paisley pendant in it, muahaha!

Mark Payne – artist and designer

Mark and I struck up a friendship on Red Bubble when he sent me a ffffound invite (no sorry guys, I still don’t have any and even if I did I’d give it to one of my mates!) Since then he has been one of the biggest supporters of my art practice – he even won the auction for my drawing at the Brisbane Twestival! His graphic work is beautiful – foreign worlds of fragmented and dizzying objects twisted like bright alien car crashes.

Kate O’Brien – photographer

I had the fortune of befriending Kate a couple of years ago when I was planning my wedding. I had admired her vintage-esque photographs for a while, and nervously emailed her asking if she’d like to photograph our wedding – she agreed and we became friends! She has also never done another wedding since :P

Ashley Moyer – fat activist and Chunky Dunk organiser

It may or may not come as a surprise, but I am fat and I am a fat advocate. Ashley is one of my fat activist friends: she has been a cheerleader and is running Chunky Dunk in Portland this year. Chunky Dunk events are private pool parties for people of size and their allies, and were started last year to provide a shame-free venue for swimming, bathing and bomb diving for fat folk. I really want to be Ashley when I grow up, and start Chunky Dunk parties here in Brisbane, Australia!!

Stick around for the next few days to cop a load of my other talented friends!
