The finals for the Chambord Shine Awards were held on Tuesday night in Sydney and I was down there amongst all the glamorous people! It’s been such an honour to be involved in blogging the Shine Awards over the past few months, and to have access to some of Australia’s best fashion design talent. Don’t think I didn’t use my opportunities to enquire as to whether any of these designers would apply their talent to plus size fashion either :P (I am unrelenting! I shall not relent!)

The Strand Arcade on Sydney’s Pitt Street Mall played venue to the Chambord Shine Awards, and Melissa Hoyer was our gracious host. Please excuse my photos, I couldn’t get a good position and my camera is just a lil old point and shoot!! All the awesome photos in the gallery and below are by Karen Watson ;)


I really liked seeing the big, full on ruffly shouldered shtick by Lulu in Chains so I was pleased to see it echoed in their finals design.


Jolet’s peplum detail thrilled me, I could definitely see one of my sisters rocking this gorgeous dress!


Limedrop did a fantastic digital print of a carousel horse on their entry… and what do you know, it paid off! Clea and Nathan were well deserved winners of the Chambord Shine Awards 2010! All of us gasped when Melissa made the announcement, because the digital print was just so different to many of the other traditional spring racing designs.


Congratulations Limedrop! As part of the prize for winning the Chambord Shine Awards, their dress will be worn by Gracie Otto at the Spring Racing Carnival and marie claire will feature the label in a double page spread. Limedrop will also have the opportunity to show their collection at the 2011 L’Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival.

We three bloggers landed in Sydney yesterday morning, ready for the town to work its butt off at the Shine Awards. Brisbane’s designers kicked off proceedings fabulously and Melbourne’s talent totally met the challenge, so we were all curious to see how Sydney’s local designers were going to measure up in the competition.

We were on unfamiliar turf last night as we tripped into The Loft, and in a way it was kind of nice to be in a city that none of us had any allegiance to! The Loft is a dark, intimate space with bouncy carpet and beautifully textural walls, looking out on to Darling Harbour and all its winking lights.

After securing a vantage point amongst the enthusiastic crowd I was pleased to discover that the lighting was going to work to my advantage, seeing as I typically avoid flash photography. I’m pretty pleased with the photos I took, you can see a lot more details but certainly a lot of the ambient light roaming around the frame is missing – and I know a couple of you really like that effect!

The crowd chose Lulu in Chains as their favourite.

I was really impressed with Sydney’s entrants. Every collection had something I liked, and there was a distinct sense of excitement and enthusiasm vibrating through the room. My stand out favourites were Lulu in Chains and Danielle Van Camp, and I was pleased to see the public and the judges (respectively) reward them with a place in the finals. The other judge selection was LUELA – check out the photo in the gallery, the detailing on the neckline is very pretty.

It’s been an absolute blast attending these heats and covering them on my blog, and it was made even more fantastic because I got to share the experience with Lady Melbourne and Fashion Hayley, two fancy ladies whose passion for fashion is infectious. It’s not over just yet though! The finals will be held at The Strand, Sydney on August 29 and while 9 finalists are locked in there is one spot remaining and you get to vote your favourite designer in.

I have been completely remiss in letting you know about the new Leeloo exhibition, Disband! Considering that I am a part of it, and I drew the poster illustration, I ought to smack my own wrist.

Here’s a bit of info on the show – if you’re in Sydney you must go check it out!

Inspired by the 40th anniversary since the break-up of The Beatles, the theme of this carefully curated exhibition, titled Disband, is the end of relationships, be they romantic or otherwise. With the support of one of Sydney’s favourite indie art venue’s, aMBUSH gallery, Renee and Angela will be creating somewhat of an installation where visitors will tour the apartment of a couple undergoing such a split, and the featured works will be on the wall of their “living space”.

Expect to see original pieces by Australian artists Kelly Smith, Ben Zen, Laura McKellar and Elisa Mazzone (examples shown in image) as well as talented peeps like Natalie Perkins, Jordan Clarke, Courtney Brims and Jessica Hyde and many more. On the opening night, you can also expect to see a cute 10-minute play titled “A Toothbrush Tale (We’ll Always Have Peach Tiles)” which was recently a finalist in the international Short & Sweet Festival, by Sydney’s own Anika Herbert.

Opening night will be Thursday May 27th, 2010 at aMBUSH gallery from 6pm to 9pm, with the exhibition open daily from 10am to 5pm through to Sunday May 30th. Artworks will be available for sale, and we will again have a small Leeloo “pop-up store” for the public to have a hands-on look at some of our gorgeous online goodies from the Friday to Sunday. All walks of life are welcome for the duration, and we look forward to seeing you there!


Do you like sneak peeks? If you don’t, you’re S-O-L folks, this is one of the pieces I am probably going to show in Disband. Probably… because I have quite a few ideas and I’m still working it all out!

The lovely Rebecca Murphy has organised This Little Piggy, an exhibition of 25 artists and 25 little piggy banks, and it’s opening on February 12th at China Heights. Indeed, I shall be one of those 25 artists and have vandalised a little piggy in the most loving way.

The lovely Rebecca Murphy has organised This Little Piggy, an exhibition of 25 artists and 25 little piggy banks, and it’s opening on February 12th at China Heights. Indeed, I shall be one of those 25 artists and have vandalised a little piggy in the most loving way.

Let me tell you about this particular little pig. I received him in the mail courtesy of the brutish hands of Australia Post, and he was in pieces. I figured I’d incorporate a little of his turbulent history when creating the piece so instead of carefully gluing him back together and glossing over his many battle wounds I drew different patterns on his many portions and created Advice Pig. If you go to the show, you will see an example of his sage wisdom on the other side…!

I don’t mean to brag, but I’m so happy to be part of the Once Upon show! Thanks to the combined efforts of Renee and Angela, the show pulls together 38 of Australia’s most amazing emerging artists and themes of fairy tales and folk law (one of my areas of interest!) Once Upon is opening on November 19th at aMBUSH Gallery in Sydney – you should go and tell me all about it! I wish I could be there but alas I can’t afford to fly down, boo hoo.

Stuff for Once Upon
I’m allowed to show you but a peek… I have four pieces in the show and all of them will be revealed on the night in their pretty frames, waiting to be crowned with a red SOLD! dot. My theme is “Chicken Little”, a story I feel quite comfortable with in this age of hysteria and superstition! I have sent scans to Renee and Angela tonight, but I have another idea for two of my pieces and I really want to explore them… I just hope I have time.
