When Alex Louisa let me know that my Lovely postcard was used in this month’s issue of Home Beautiful magazine I was pretty surprised. I’m glad the stylist liked it enough to include it (though it’d be cool if it was attributed, just saying!)

This is what I do on Friday nights. I’m not a rager and you won’t find me at a party; no sir, I’m right here drawing and mucking around. After noticing that my clients seem to want me to do a lot of script lettering, my friend Viv challenged me to draw something like this. Instead of rendering it by hand I decided to take it into Illustrator, because I haven’t done much lettering work in the program for ages.

Yes, it says “Script is borls”. Interpret as you wish :P

I found this beetle crawling around the hibiscus the other day. It’s nearly time for Christmas beetles, but this isn’t one of those… I wonder what it is?

I’ve been doing a bit of drawing and experimenting for myself in the last week, and one of the things I’ve liked doing is drawing in white gouache over a black inked background. Doodling with a paintbrush is becoming a frequent thing for me because it helps relieve a lot of hand and wrist pain I suffer from gripping pens too tightly.

In my late night internet traversings I came across Miss Platnum, a Romanian-German singer who combines hip hop, R&B and folk music. She is beyond stunning, right?

This is part of a installation work by Finnish artist Johnna Pohjalainen. When I first saw this picture I did a double take because the scale confused me so much. They look like actual pencils! Do click through and see the other photos of this work, the installed upright pencils look like they are colouring the sky, the clouds and the sunset.

These invitations are the work of Aaron Scamihorn who goes by the name of Ron Lewhorn. He says they were designed for a friend who was having a party based on the theme of these horse races. Because, like so many wonderful images, this was posted to tumblr uncredited I spent ages trying to source the designer! I’m glad I did, this work is wonderful.

Crabs freak me out, but this Purple Shore Crab taken by Pete McGregor is certainly a fancy one! I love the purple colour on its front claws and the adorable upturned eyes.

I know white washed walls and furniture are really hip right now, but I’m into it. It appeals to my desire for natural light and sparseness, because I actually live in a dim, dank cavern of an apartment with only pin-pricks of natural light coming through. This fancy-framed mirror juxtaposes nicely with the stacked packing pallets. Yes, I said juxtaposes. Please don’t unsubscribe. The Selby took this photo – you should go and look at the rest if you enjoy this aesthetic.

May is such a lovely month here in Brisbane. The air gets a little crisper but the sun is still strong and it’s perfect weather to read a book in the sun. Because many of you are from the other side of the world, I am mindful not to make my designs too southern hemisphere oriented, but I selfishly want to considering northern hemisphere people are rarely mindful of us! I bought new turquoise ink and wanted to use it to create a desktop that encapsulated the nip in the wind and the warmth of the sun that I find so charming at this time of the year in Brisbane. I hope it translates for you, wherever you are in the world!

These desktops are especially dedicated to Mark and Tee, who donated flickr pro accounts to me when I couldn’t afford to pay to extend my pro time. Thank you so much guys, you really saved my ass and helped get these desktops up this month.

Tibetan sky burial photographs
A huge warning here – these photos depict death and gore, do not click if you prefer not to see photos of that nature. I’m fascinated with death and ritual, and how different people have developed their traditions in line with their worldview and environmental considerations. This Buddhist burial ritual is shocking to me as a white person in a first world country, whose only dealings with death have been quite sanitary and polite, however I can also see the beauty in the sky burial. I don’t believe in resurrection or an afterlife or reincarnation, but I do believe that we are all returned to the earth and this tradition is very much in line with my worldview.

I haven’t said much on the issue because I’m curious to see what happens next, but for a lot of media observers it has just been a bunch of “empower-tainment” porn rather than meaningful progression and discussion about body image.
