We don’t have much space in our apartment, but I have the privilege of being able to take up a whole room for my nefarious creative activities. Working anti-clockwise: one corner is filled with my computer and desk, with printer and scanner; a filing cabinet is tucked next to the door; right beside that is my sewing cabinet; and the last corner has my other work table. I divide my time mostly between the computer and the other table, and it has a few purposes.

This is how it looks by default. I use a slanted drawing board to help with my RSI, but if I’m doing general crafts or Gocco printing I remove it and put it under my desk so I can use the whole desk to cut, paste, print and assemble.

I also use it to photograph small things inside my lightbox, kindly given to me by my friend Bec before she moved away from Brisbane.

I would love to have a work area like Martha Stewart’s, it is My Dream Work Room. It deserves capitalisation!

We spend so much time working (especially if we love what we do) that it seems silly not to indulge ourselves in a fantastic space! Unfortunately being a renter we don’t really get to have a say in the wall colour or anything really that involves putting holes in the walls. Ideally I’d have a room with lots of natural light and ventilation, bogloads of storage space and shelves, and big wide desks!

Do you have any requirements for your dream work area? I’d love to hear them.

I am just about to commence a huge office do-over because I have wayyy too many arts and crafts supplies and wayyyy not enough storage. Currently I have scraps of paper floating around the room, pencils stuck in magazines, gocco prints in the filing cabinet and drawing paper sitting on my sewing machine…. and it’s driving me NUTS! The other day I cracked it and sat down and drew up a plan of what I’d like to solve the mayhem in my workspace.

Because I am one of those starving artist type people, I don’t have a couple of hundred dollars to drop on a lovely visit to Ikea to fill my lovely life with lovely Scandinavian things. I put out a twitter BOLO for a bookcase, sent my husband scrambling over ebay for local bargains and whinged to my mother about the whole kerfuffle. Nothing solves problems like whinging to your mother… she had a white Ikea Billy bookcase in the garage going unloved! So tonight we get to find out if it will fit in my little Hyundai, and I start my next search – for little boxey type things to organise everything on the shelves.

Square Tin Stack – AUD$12.95

I had initially thought about just cutting shoe boxes in half and reusing any card stock I had on hand to create the boxes. Then I found Smiggle! They have quite reasonably priced stackable boxes that would suit my purposes beautifully… here are a few more things that would organise my space better.

Round Tin Stack – AUD$8.95

A4 Medium Flat Tin – AUD$14.95

Wooden Pen Stand – AUD$9.95

I’m not getting paid to blog about Smiggle products, but hi Smiggle! Wanna pay me (in stationery!!!!) to blog about your products? :P

ETA!!! I decided to continue my small storage search on Ikea, crack for home makers. This is turning into a “wish list” now!

I’ve just come across photos of Google’s Zurich office… and man, all I can say is I’m totally going to go to them, hand in cap, and ask if they need someone else to draw pretty Google logos every day of the year!!

“Oh, your 9am is downstairs”
“Super, I’ll just TAKE THE SLIDE down to the foyer”
“Rightio then!”

For a while, the most fun thing we had in our lunch room at a former workplace was a ping pong table and a boiling water machine that sporadically dispensed “SURPRISE 3rd degree burns”. Obviously, it was far superior to this lunch room. :(

One of my old workmates came up with business hammocks as a motivational tool…

This is a really unsexy topic for me to blog about, but I wanted to draw attention to the issue of RSI in the graphic design profession. It’s an injury that is very real in the workplace, but it doesn’t get much press. Usually sufferers pass it off as “just part of the job”, but I’d be interested to find out the actual percentage of people who suffer RSI and the percentage of those people who take days off or “just work through it”.

Moreover, OSHA’s sound advice to “vary activities” and “take frequent breaks” doesn’t acknowledge the reality that many jobs, such as graphic design, programming, and word processing, require nonstop computer use.
Deborah Quilter

Generally, I just try to work through it, but this typically results in a pretty bad spasm or episode, meaning I am forced to take a day off work to have a break from sitting on my butt all day making tiny and precise gestures with my right hand. Even typing this entry is giving my wrist a break, and I’m always amazed that a sedentary job like graphic design results in such debilitating injury.

At work I use a Wacom Graphire graphics tablet. To be honest, I thought this would be the solution to all of my pointing related problems (sore neck, sore shoulders, burning wrist, restricted movement in my fingers), but after two months of use I can’t say its any better than the optical mouse I had before. I do love using a tablet and stylus, it has sped up my work flow quite a bit, however I can’t feel any benefits in terms of my RSI, which I’m really disappointed about.

So I’ve done a little bit of research and gathered some cool ideas for combating RSI. I’ll pick a few to road-test over the next few months and track their effectiveness.
It pops up in the lower right hand corner of your screen, and stays on top of everything else on your desktop. Text instructions and videos take you six simple exercises. After just one round of stretches, I felt tension in my arms and neck release! Imagine doing this at regular intervals all day – could I really be pain free at the end of the working day?! I’ll let you know how this treats me!

The program runs in the background, prompting me to take a break and stretch every hour. If it didn’t, it wouldn’t be any good to me. I’ve been shown all these exercises before – the problem is remembering to do it! If I am prompted visually on my screen, I can see myself actually doing these stretches regularly.

The best part about this program is that it’s free. Try it for yourself!

This palm-sized egg-shaped ball helps build up muscle strength in the hand and arm, and there are four different resistance levels. To me, this is an overpriced stress ball. We made stress balls at primary school by putting flour inside of a couple of balloons. I’m sure the theory is the same, but there’d have to be some kind of other squishable substance inside for higher resistance.

From Sportstek – the Eggsercizer costs AUD$15.00 + GST and postage.

I LOVE the concept behind this (and the name), because I love tactile things (and puns). I’d just worry that there would be residue that got into my keyboard or tablet stylus!!

Topical Cream

Tiger Balm
I am a huge fan of Tiger Balm Red and my family has been using this ointment since forever. There are a few different ointments, but this one is ideal for reducing swelling and pain in muscles. The scent is pleasant too – it’s not as stinky as Dencorub!

Sports Ice Joint and Muscle Gel
This comes highly recommended from a friend of mine who suffers from acute pain in her joints, but is allergic to anti-inflammatory drugs.

How do you combat RSI in the workplace? Let me know – there needs to be much more discussion about this condition.
